Sous le règne de Louis XIV, l'écrivain et prêtre François-Timoléon de Choisy a passé une partie de sa vie habillé en femme. Courtisé, apprécié ou moqué, il a fini par se ranger des fanfreluches en public pour se convertir à la sobriété. «…L'envie d'être belle me reprit avec fureur ; je fis faire des habits magnifiques, je remis de beaux pendants d'oreilles. Les rubans, les mouches, les airs coquets, les petites mines, rien ne fut oublié. Je croyais être encore aimable, et je voulais être aimée.» L'auteur de ces lignes s'appelle l'abbé de Choisy. Ecrivain, académicien, diplomate, mais aussi prêtre, il a vécu habillé en femme, entretenant des liaisons avec les deux sexes. Personnage baroque du XVIIIe siècle égaré dans le XVIIe, ce contemporain de Louis XIV a défié son temps par la liberté de ses moeurs. François-Timoléon de Choisy naît à Paris le 16 août 1644, au sein d'une famille de notables. Son père est chancelier du frère de Louis XIII, le duc d'Orléans. Séductrice, arriviste forcenée, sa mère, Olympe, a été mêlée aux pires intrigues du règne («Il n'y avait rien où elle ne voulût se fourrer», disait la fille du duc d'Orléans). Elle saura pourtant se ménager les entrées du jeune Louis XIV, et sans doute un accès momentané à sa couche, gagnant au passage une rente à vie. Ce personnage dévorant reporte son ambition sur son plus jeune fils. Comme le note le biographe Dirk van der Cruysse, elle met dans sa passion maternelle «l'extravagance qui la caractérise en toute chose». Seul (petit) problème, l'enfant appelé à suivre son exemple a un zizi. Qu'à cela ne tienne, elle s'en passera. Dans ses souvenirs, l'intéressé confie que ses goûts lui sont venus «presque en naissant» : «Ma mère m'a accoutumé aux habillements des femmes ; j'ai continué à m'en servir dans ma jeunesse.» Jusqu'à 7 ou 8 ans, les vêtements des enfants ne diffèrent guère selon leur sexe. Cependant, le garçon ayant à 15 ans perdu son père, Madame de Choisy lui imprime durablement sa marque. La silicone tardant à être inventée et la chirurgie brésilienne n'étant pas à l'apogée de l'art qu'elle atteindra au XXe siècle, Olympe modèle ce corps blafard et potelé. Elle lui perce les oreilles pour lui prêter ses boucles, lui administrant des baumes pour éradiquer les poils du menton. Comme d'autres jeunes gens, il apprend la danse, la musique et le clavecin mais évite les disciplines plus viriles. Sa mère entend ainsi le pousser dans les bras d'un puissant et, pourquoi pas ?, du frère du jeune roi, Philippe d'Orléans, de dix ans son cadet, dont il a été le compagnon de jeu au jardin du Luxembourg : «Ne soyez pas glorieux, songez que vous n'êtes qu'un bourgeois», lance-t-elle à son fils pour le presser de se rendre aux fêtes et d'y faire ses avances. Il se liera durablement, entre autres, au cardinal de Bouillon. Olympe lui fait recevoir, à 18 ans, les bénéfices d'une abbaye en Bourgogne. Il passe sa licence de théologie à la Sorbonne. Mais, à 20 ans, il fugue à Bordeaux pour rejoindre une troupe de théâtre. Un jeu dangereux au moment où il reçoit les honneurs de sa charge, mais il est fou de joie des mois passés à jouer les héroïnes de Corneille. «J'avais des amants à qui j'accordais des petites faveurs, fort réservé sur les grandes», confie-t-il dans ses souvenirs. Il est cependant appelé à se calmer, quelque temps. Sa famille l'envoie à Venise, où il s'adonne au jeu, passion autrement plus destructive. En 1669, à la mort de sa mère, il choisit dans l'héritage sa garde-robe et ses bijoux. Quelques années plus tard, il écrit : «Je suis retombé dans mes anciennes faiblesses, je suis redevenu femme.» Prenant résidence au faubourg Saint-Marcel, où il sait bénéficier de la tolérance amusée d'un quartier resté encore populaire, il se fait appeler «Madame de Sancy».
