Maintaining these high standards of excellence, the third edition incorporates a new body of significant and at times controversial literature in its focus on new questions about the institution of slavery and about the social and cultural response of blacks to their enslavement. Reflecting the era of investigation which has blossomed in the past few years, the third edition includes selections from the most important, imaginative, and stimulating recent works.
