Il volume prende in esame una componente finora poco analizzata degli ultimi anni della Democrazia cristiana, cioè quei settori cattolico-democratici che cercarono di rinnovare il partito o comunque intesero individuarne una nuova collocazione po…litico-culturale: furono loro tra i protagonisti della diaspora che portò alla fine dell'unità politica dei cattolici. Il referendum sul divorzio, nel 1974, costituì per molti l'avviso che la DC non era più adatta a rappresentare unitariamente la posizione dei cattolici. Si guardò al PCI e al rinnovamento che stava vivendo con la segreteria di Berlinguer, e non mancò chi, in occasione delle elezioni del 1976, si candidò pur da indipendente nelle sue liste; altri diedero vita all'esperienza della Lega democratica, che tenne insieme personaggi della cultura cattolico-liberale come Scoppola, Ruffilli e Lipari - fiduciosi di un possibile rinnovamento della DC - e credenti vicini alla cultura cattolico-sociale come Ardigò, Paolo Prodi e Paolo Giuntella - convinti della necessità di creare invece un nuovo soggetto politico. La disillusione per come De Mita dirigeva il partito andò crescendo negli anni Ottanta, mentre Leoluca Orlando inaugurava, con l'appoggio di Sergio Mattarella, l'esperienza della "Primavera di Palermo". La fondazione del movimento della Rete, nel quale confluirono molti giovani, fu poi tra i primi segnali della fine prossima dell'unità politica dei cattolici, che si sarebbe esplicitata in occasione delle elezioni del 1994. Non si trattava certo della conclusione del cattolicesimo politico, ma dell'inizio di un suo nuovo protagonismo all'interno della più vasta cultura progressista avviata da Romano Prodi, che aveva avuto il suo esordio politico proprio nella Lega democratica e che nel 1996 diede vita all'Ulivo.
