Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. 1st Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. Inscribed and signed by the author on the front end page to Miss Josephine Anne Freeman along with a September 1937 date. DJ is soiled and scuffed numerous chips and large tears. At some point the underside of the jacket was neatly reinforced with masking tape along the top and bottom edges. Blue paper covered boards underneath show some spotting and toning along edges and spine but have otherwise always been protected by the jacket. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues. No bookplates or library markings in the only handwriting is from the author which also includes a correction on page 119, line 5, where a single word was crossed out and the spelling corrected by hand. No other handwriting found in the book. Signed by Author(s).

Illustrated with half-tone reproductions. Romantic historical novel set in Japan, written by a Fryeburg, Maine author during the period of increased U.S. popular interest in the Far East. Neat handwrtten corrections to first page of Introduction and page 119 of text most likely made by author. Cover corners and spine edges moderately-to-heavily rubbed; slight cover discoloration. Front endpaper removed, exposing binding hinge. Library marks: inkstamps to inside front and rear covers and title page; neat catalog digits at upper margin of Dedication page.

Introduction by William Elliot Griffis verifies accuracy of descriptions, time and place based on his experience. Published the same year Hirohito became emperor, this novel provides historical background for Japan entering into modern times.
