First Edition of this epistolary account of the geography, natural resources, inhabitants and economic prospects of Nova Scotia, "the most complete picture available of [the province] in the 1820s." (DCB) A captain in the 52nd Light Infantry, the author was stationed in Nova Scotia from 1826 to 1831, during which time he travelled extensively throughout the province, mapped Halifax harbour, commanded the small army detachment in Prince Edward Island, and acted in his last year as deputy quartermaster-general for the Nova Scotia command. "While sometimes overwritten, this book contains frank comments on Halifax and on garrison society and excellent geographical and descriptive material. Moorsom makes allowance for climate in his criticism of roads and agricultural methods but regrets that fishing and lumbering are permitted to tempt the settler from his farm to the neglect of his fields." (Story) While some Nova Scotians were offended by Moorsom's occasional derogatory comments, Joseph Howe noted in the Novascotian that they were forgivable in view of the great benefit arising from his helping to publicize the colony in England. The aquatint plates depict (1) Province House, Holles Street Halifax, (2) Cape Blomidon, or Blow-me-down, and the Basin of Mines, from the Horton Mountains, and (3) Lochaber Lake, County Sydney, Nova Scotia.
