Thus, the volume shows above all the potential that lies in the further exploration of the central Black Sea region and northern central Anatolia in the Hellenistic-Roman period. The differences in comparison to the Aegean and the southern coast of Anatolia are evident, but could be further analysed in the future on the basis of a denser data set. The same applies to understanding the relationship of rural areas to urban centres such as Ancyra-Ankara. Dabei werden nicht nur die assyrischen Denkmäler auf einer völlig neuen Grundlage untersucht und vorgelegt, sondern durch die Analyse der Funde und der historischen Quellen ist es nun möglich, die Siedlungsgeschichte der Region vom Neolithikum bis in die Zeit der arabischen Kalifate und ihre Stellung zwischen den Kulturen Ostanatoliens und Nordmesopotamiens nachzuzeichnen. Bei Birkleyn tritt einer der westlichen Quellarme des Tigris aus dem Taurus an die Oberfläche, nachdem er zuvor etwa 1 km durch einen natürlichen Tunnel geflossen ist. Diese geographische Situation charakterisiert den Ort als etwas Besonders im Vorderen Orient und macht ihn in vielen Epochen zu einem mythischen Anziehungspunkt. Diese Stelle galt unter anderem den Assyrern als eigentliche Quelle des Tigris und kann mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit als Ort eines Naturheiligtums interpretiert werden. Die Bedeutung des Ortes zeigt sich insbesondere daran, dass zwei assyrische Herrscher des 12. bzw. 9. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. hier Inschriften und Felsreliefs hinterlassen haben.
