Owner's name (David Bodian) on front end page. Bodian was a medical scientist at Johns Hopkins University. He, also attended the University of Chicago where he earned a Bachelor of Sci…ence degree in Zoology in 1931, followed by his PH.D in 1934 and his M.D in 1937. Dr. Bodian came to Hopkins in 1939 as a research fellow in Anatomy. Over the next 20 years the team at Hopkins would make several discoveries which would lead to the development of the Polio vaccine. In 1958 he and his colleagues, as well as 12 other polio experts were inducted into the Polio Hall of Fame at the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1958, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1968. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1968 and the American Philosophical Society in 1973. In 1985, the Society honored him with the Karl Spencer Lashley Award. Bodian was an honorary member of the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the French Neurological Society, and the Mexican Society of Anatomy, and he served as president of the American Association of Anatomists from 1971 to 1972. In 1980, the Johns Hopkins University dedicated the Bodian Room in recognition of his contributions to polio research.

Auch Bemerkung in Bleistift im Nachsatz. Diverse Knicke. Seiten ungeschnitten. Sir Edward Albert Sharpey-Schafer (eigentlich Edward Albert Schäfer, * 2. Juni 1850 in Hornsey bei London; 29. März 1935 in North Berwick, East Lothian, Schottland) war ein englischer Physiologe. Scharpey-Schafer ist Erfinder der nach ihm benannten Schafer-Methode zur künstlichen Beatmung. 1910 vermutete Sharpey-Schafer, dass eine einzige chemische Substanz in der Bauchspeicheldrüse bei Patienten mit Diabetes mellitus fehle. Diese Substanz nannte er Insulin. Nach anderen Quellen geht die Postulierung eines entscheidenden Hormons in der Bauchspeicheldrüse und die Namensnennung Insulin" auf den belgischen Pathologen Jean de Meyer (1878-1934) im Jahre 1909 zurück. Scharpey-Schafer war von 1899 bis 1933 Professor für Physiologie an der University of Edinburgh. 1924 erhielt er für seine wissenschaftlichen Verdienste die Copley Medal. Their experiments on monkeys demonstrated the visual center in the occipital lobe and, most importantly, established a number of temporal lobe functions. . . .…In the late 1880s, Sanger Brown and Edward Schäfer performed a systematic study of occipital and temporal cerebral cortical excisions in 12 monkeys to establish the functions of these regions. Ferrier, who believed that the parietal angular gyrus was the center of vision and the superior temporal gyrus was the center of hearing, refused to accept their observations, despite the fact that these monkeys were being displayed at the London meetings of the neurological and physiological societies. The work of Klüver and Bucy verified the findings of Brown and Schäfer and greatly expanded on these findings and the unusual behavioral constellation.
