The issue is noteworthy for having "Arguments about Dostoevsky" a two act play by Kiev-born, Jewish author Friedrich Gorenshtein, who was the screenwriter for the great Russian science fiction film "Solaris" (based on th…e book of the same title by Stanislav Lem); Gorenshtein was also the author of the Important novelette, "Traveling Companions" - a part of the larger Babii Iar 'Ravine Literature'). This would be the first appearance of this play, at least in an English translation. Also in this issue is a brief piece in which Marcel Proust, Paul Claudel, and André Gide offer opinions on "Ce Russe sublime" . After this is an article by Leonard Shapiro titled "A Story of Incompatibility : Dostoevsky and Turgenev". Next, Jean Mambrino offers a poem titled "Adam"; David Magarshack discusses the problems of "translating from the Russian" (this is a posthumous piece); and Roger Cardinal shares a poem , "Winter to Me". The issue ends, as usual, with "Views and Reviews " : These are "Dostoevskii , prophet manque?", by Sergei Hackel; "Rozanov and Dostoevsky", by Alexander Piatogorsky; "Has the Raw Youth Grown Up?", by Zinovy Zinik; and finally, "A Roumanian Connection", by Virgil Cândea. You will note that an error was made by the printer in setting up the Table of Contents : the Poem by Jean Mambrino is incorrectly added at the end of the Contents as being on page 74 (which doesn't exist - the issue ends with unpaginated page 73, printed on the inside of the rear cover). Someone has, in pencil, xed it out and indicated where the poem is properly placed. Leonard Bertram Naman Schapiro CBE (22 April 1908 - 2 November 1983) was a British scholar of the origins and development of the Soviet political system. He taught for many years at the London School of Economics, where he was Professor of Political Science with Special Reference to Russian Studies. Schapiro was best known for his study, The Communist Party of the Soviet Union, though his early work on the rise to power of the Bolshevik Party, The Origins of the Communist Autocracy, was his most intellectually ambitious contribution to the field of Soviet studies. Joseph Godson was a former Foreign Service officer and European coordinator of the Center for Strategic and International Studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Mr. Godson, a native of Poland, was a 1937 graduate of the College of the City of New York and received a law degree from New York University in 1940. In 1950 he joined the Foreign Service and became labor attache at the American Embassy in Ottawa until 1952 and in London from 1953 to 1959. He then went to Belgrade, Yugoslavia, as a first secretary from 1959 to 1961 and to Zagreb as consul general until 1964. He became consul general in Edinburgh in 1968 and remained there until he retired from the service in 1971. This volume attempts to discover, by looking at many varieties of evidence, to what extent the working class of the USSR has been the beneficiary of a revolution which was ostensibly carried out on its behalf, and of over sixty years of rule in its name by a communist party. The motive force behind Marx's analysis of society--probably the most potent intellectual influence of the last two centuries--was the desire to put right the injustice presented by the exploitation of the majority in industrial countries, the proletariat, by the minority, the bourgeoisie. The contributors include the editors and Peter Wiles, Davie Dyker, Murray Seeger, Murray Yanowitch, Fyodor Turovsky, Alastair McAuley, Max Ralis and Keith Bush.
