In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. viii+144 pages with diagrams and tables. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in blue stiff boards. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5267). First edition. For the second time Carl Schlechter shared a first prize in a German competition. A strong pre-tournament favorite, the Austrian visitor began well with three out of four points but then allowed to many draws to overcome a sixth-round defeat to Rudolf Swiderski. Among the costly "Remis" were uninspired draws against the 10th-12th place finishers. Leo Fleischmann, Horatio Caro and Walter John, and a last-round draw against his old Graz nemesis, Johann Berger. Another vital half-point went a glimmering in the tenth round when Schlechter, after brilliantly outplaying Os Bernstein, unaccountably overlooked a clear win and allowed the young Russian to escape with a perpetual check. Swiderski (+6 -3 =3), one of two other first-place winners, enjoyed a fine tournament, defeating both Schlechter and Curt von Bardeleben to finish the tourney with the most wins. Sharing top prize with Schlechter and Swiderski was the well groomed Berlin Master Bardeleben (+5 -2 +5), whose two losses came at the hands of the co-winners. The inordinately large number of draws (40 out of 78 games!) prompted criticism about the lack of fighting spirit at Coburg. The "Hauptturnier A" at Coburg featured a number of soon-to-be well-known masters: co-winners Neumann and Vidmar (Neumann won the playoff, +2, -1 =2), followed by Duras, Spielmann and Nimzovitch. "Hauptturnier B" winner was Fahrni, and "Haptturnier C" saw Przepoiorka emerge the victor. Condition: Rebound in stiff blue boards with some toning to the edges, corners bumped else a very good copy.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. viii+202 pages with photographs, diagrams and tables. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 3/4") bound in brown cloth with gilt lettering to cover. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5310) First edition. Breslau played host to the 18th Congress of the German Chess Federation. It took place form July 14th through August 7th and it was a single round tournament with 30 move time limit in two hours. The competition was the first German tournament that Rubinstein participated in - while it turned out to be the last one for Amos Burn. The implacable Rubinstein repeated his triumphs of San Sebastian and Pistyan (9+ -2 =6), but had to share honors with Duras (+10 -3 =4). Rubinstein relinquished the lead to Tarrasch, Marshall and Teichmann in turn between the eight and 15th rounds, but he entered the last round with a half-point lead. Meanwhile, Duras secured his share of the first prize by defeating Burn in the last round. The excitement of the tournament is underscored by the fact that the leaders remained bunched throughout the competition. Teichmann, Tarrasch and Schlechter were always within striking distance of pocketing the 2,000 mark first prize. The closeness of the Breslau struggle is seen in the fact that only a single point separated the first five players. Squeaking out third-place honors was Teichmann (+7 -1 =9), who finished a scant half-point ahead of Schlechter and Tarrasch, the fourth-fifth place winners. His only setback came at the hands of Tarrasch in the second round. Surprise of the 17th and final round was Carls' defeat of the veteran Tarrasch. It is noteworthy that Schlechter followed up his score of drawn games at Pistyan (14!) by going through he Breslau tournament undefeated. Despite compiling 12 draws, Schlechter amassed six points against the top finishers. The always exuberant Spielmann (+7 -4 =6) got off to a falter start, losing the first two games to Lowtzky and Carls. Mieses made a welcome reappearance in the tournament arena and following an unpromising start, qucikly recovered his earlier form to tally five points against the top finishers. Two native sons, Barasz (+3 -3 =11) and Breyer (+6 -6 =5), performed well to dived the eight and ninth prizes. The German master Erich Cohn (+3 -6 =8) received a special prize for the best score (four draws) by a nonprizewinner aginst the top four places. Condition: Rebound in attractive cloth, some occasional internal pencil marginalia, notes on back end paper in ink else a very good copy.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 272 pages with diagrams and tables. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in half leather with marbled boards and raised spine bands, gilt lettering to spine. Provenance from the library of Bibliothek des Schachereins Andersen in Breslau (Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5235) First edition. The Deutschen Schachbund had been founded in Leipzig in 1877. When the next meeting took place in the Schützenhaus in 1879, sixty-two clubs had become member of the chess federation. Hofrat von Gottschall became Chairman and Zwanzig the General Secretary. Twelve players participated in the master tournament of Leipzig 1879. Thereafter the field increased and improved. When foreign players were invited for Berlin 1881, an important and successful formula was completed: 1. A master tournament was organized every second year, in a time when few international events took place. 2. Germans could partake in many groups and their talents qualified for master tournaments by a master title in the Hauptturnier. Many important chess players took part, but Lasker found the prizes too low, when he was world champion. Tarrasch and Schlechter won three master events. Organizers kept a balance between the interests of amateurs and professionals. The Great War ended a fine tradition. Coinciding with the 7th Congress of the German Chess Association, a series of chess events were held in Dresden in 1892, including the Dresden 1892 Chess Tournament that brought together renowned chess players of the time: the German champion of the era Siegbert Tarrasch, the English master Joseph H. Blackburne, the strong Austrian player Georg Marco, the outstanding Romanian chess player Adolf Albin, the Polish player Szymon Winawer or the great German promise Carl August Walbrodt, among others. Tarrasch started a priori as favorite given that he had been awarded the two previous major tournaments: Breslau 1889 and Manchester 1890 but started the tournament very imprecisely, with two draws and one defeat in the first four rounds. Despite his 51 years old, Blackburne shared that stigma of favorite for his victory in Berlin 1881 and his second place in Manchester 1890 and so it seemed at first to prove it with 3 wins and a draw in his first 4 games, but as the tournament progressed his game became inaccurate and somewhat disappointing, losing defeats to players theoretically inferior to his level of play. The game chosen by the jury as a prize for brilliance and awarded to the English master Joseph Henry Blackburne. The Dresden 1892 Chess Tournament was won by S. Tarrasch who won a first prize of 1000 marks. The second place was shared by the Hungarian player Gyula Makovetz, editor of the chess magazine Budapesti Sakkszemle, and the Czech player Moritz Porges, resident in Prague, who shared equally 700 marks and 500 marks of the 2nd and 3rd prize. The third place with prizes of 350 marks (4th prize) and 150 marks (5th prize) was shared by the Austrian player Georg Marco who would subsequently win the Vienna 1895 chess tournament and become the editor of the well-known magazine Wiener Schachzeitung'from 1898 to 1916 and the young German player Carl August Walbrodt of Berlin who would win along with Curt von Bardeleben the Kiel 1893 Chess Tournament belonging to the 8th Congress of the German Chess Association.
