In der Literatur besteht zwar breite Einigkeit darüber, dass Wissensspillovers (entgeltlose Wissenstransfers) zwischen Individuen, Unternehmen oder Regionen auftreten, die geographische Dimension von Wissensspillovers ist jedoch umstritten, insbesondere die Frage, ob diese geographisch lokalisiert sind oder nicht.Thomas Scherngell erfasst die geographische Verbreitung von Wissensspillovers zwischen europäischen Regionen in der High-Tech-Industrie. Anhand einer empirischen Studie beruhend auf High-Tech Patentzitierungen des Europäischen Patentamtes zeigt er, dass die Intensität von Wissensspillovers mit zunehmender geographischer Distanz signifikant abnimmt. Jedoch ist dieser negative Effekt geringer als der von Landesgrenzen.
