Der erste Schatten dokumentiert sich durch eine dunkle Stelle in der ersten Kathodenschicht, der zweite kann durch einen fluoreszierenden Schirm nachgewiesen werden. Derartige Experimente wurden von Schuster, Villard und Wehnelt angestellt. Der wichtige Schluß, den diese Autoren sowie Stark aus solchen Versuchen zogen, ist folgender: Da die Kathodenstrahlen von der Kathode ausgehen, so kann der Schatten auf der Kathode nicht durch Kathodenstrahlen erzeugt sein, er wird vielmehr aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach durch die sich auf die Kathode hinbewegenden Kanalstrahlen hervorgerufen. Da ferner der Schatten auf dem Fluoreszenzschirm ebenso breit ist wie der auf der Kathode vgl. Fig. 5 bei Wehnelt 1. c.), so folgt auch, daß nur dort, wo die Kathode von Kanalstrahlen getroffen wird, Kathodenstrahlen ausgelöst werden. ."
