Il riconoscimento di questi fatti ha permesso alla cosmologia di raggiungere final mente la posizione che molti anni fa William Blake presagiva: To see a World in a Grain of Sand, And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of yom hand, And Eternity in an Hour. Devo sottolineare fin dal principio che la cosmologia è argomento di grandi controversie, in cui poche o nulle sono le conoscenze fondamentali su cui tutti concordano. Introduzione La terra, il sole, la luna, le comete, 5 pianeti, 6000 stelle: ecco il quadro dell'universo che si presentava all'uomo fino al 1609, quando per la prima volta Galileo puntò un telescopio verso il cielo. Grazie a questo strumento, che ci ha permesso di scorgere stelle troppo poco splendenti perché potessimo vederle direttamente, il campo della nostra conoscenza si è approfondito ed esteso; e poiché a mano a mano che aumentavano le dimensioni del telescopio si rivelava l'esistenza di stelle sempre meno splendenti, molti sono giunti a chiedersi: finirà mai questo processo? abbiamo qualche speranza di scoprire, se non proprio tutte le stelle, almeno lo schema fondamentale dell'universo nel suo complesso? Moltissimi astronomi, grazie ai migliori telescopi moderni, ritengono oggi di esserci riusciti. Anche se la nostra prima reazione ad un'affermazione simile è di entusiasmo per il fatto che sia stato raggiunto un risultato così importante, noi viventi non dobbiamo dimenticare che spesso si è creduto nel passato di aver risolto dei problemi scientifici fondamentali; e non era vero. Il grande matematico francese Lagrange, ad esempio, invidiava la fortuna toccata a Newton «in quanto ai suoi tempi non era ancora stato scoperto il sistema del mondo». E verso la fine del XIX secolo, la maggioranza dei fisici riteneva che non le fosse rimasto niente altro da fare che calcolare fino a un sempre maggior numero di cifre decimali quantità già note. Gli astronomi moderni hanno maggiori probabilità di esser nel giusto di quei loro eminenti predecessori? Nonostante il rischio che si corre nell'affermarlo, essi ritengono che la risposta sia: «sì». W…ith a letter from the publisher to Dr. Dennis W. Sciama loosely laid in. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, with a little bumping to the spine tips/ the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with the ownership inscription of Sciama in black ink on the front free endpaper, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper which remains without fading, loss or tears. Not price-clipped (£14.95 net to the front flap). The laid in letter on Bantam Press stationary is dated 13th May 1988 and reads "Dear Dr Sciama, / Professor Hawking asked me to send you the enclosed copy of / A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME which we are publishing on 16 June. / Yours sincerely, / [signed in purple ink] Jenny Wilford / Press and PR Manager". The recipient is English physicist Dr. Dennis W. Sciama (1926-1999), who, assigned as PhD supervisor to Stephen Hawking at the University of Cambridge in October 1962, was the first to suggest that he work on astrophysics, though much to Hawking's reluctance. "I didn't agree with many of his ideas, particularly on Mach's principle, the idea that objects owe their inertia to the influence of all the other matter in the universe, but that stimulated me to develop my own picture" (Hawking, 2013). A founding father of modern cosmology, Sciama played a pivotal role in keeping Hawking's academic career alive following his ALS diagnosis in 1963 and continuously encouraged his groundbreaking research into singularities and black holes. In addition to Hawking, he also supervised several other renowned physicists and astrophysicists in their doctoral research, including John D. Barrow, David Deutsch, and former Astronomer Royal Martin Rees. (Professor Stephen W. Hawking: My Brief History, 2013). A significant association copy of Professor Hawking's enormously influential bestseller, the first book to make quantum physics even vaguely accessible to the general reader. FIRST EDITION, bound full volume, OF REES & SCIAMA'S PREDICTION OF WHAT IS NOW CALLED THE "REES-SCIAMA EFFECT," an important correlation between galaxy density (the number of galaxies per square degree) and the temperature of the CMB in different parts of the universe. The effect is a nonlinear anistropy in the CMB…caused by large scale density inhomogeneities in the universe such as quasar clusters. "The CMB radiation is a direct relic of the early universe. It is a unique and deep probe of both the thermal history of the early universe and the primordial perturbations in the matter distribution" (Tuluie, "Cosmic Microwave Background" AJ, 1996, 15). In this paper, English physicists Martin Rees and Dennis Sciama argue and predict that these large scale density inhomogeneities and their "effect on the angular distribution of the cosmic black-body radiation" are the result of perturbations caused by photon passing through an inhomogeneous, expanding universe (Rees & Sciama, 1968, 511). Furthermore, they argue that this effect on the angular distribution could potentially be observable (ibid). Rees & Sciama imagine "a photon passing through a sphere that is expanding differently than the rest of the universe" and from there, consider four effects (1) Blue shift due to photon falling into a larger potential well than it climbs out of. (2) Doppler shift due to the observer receding from the source. (3) Gravitational Redshift from expanding universe. (4) Time delay from the gravitational field" (Asai, Rees-Sciama Effect and Superstructures). As a result of these considerations, Rees & Sciama argue that their effect "takes place when the gravitational potential well crossed by the photons varies during the flight travel time. Indeed, if the photons fall into a gravitational potential well different from the one they go out of, this induces a gravitational redshift (of the Sachs- Wolfe type). The variations in the potential wells are due essentially to the non-linear evolution of the structures. In the case when the potential well is deepened, the photons gained energy and are blue shifted while going towards the centre of a structure, and they lose even more energy than what they gain while going out.
