Condition very good in black boards with black cloth spine, DJ very good in protective mylar cover glued to the boards, ex-library with library stamp on top edge, library sticker on dedication page, and library pocket only indications of it being an ex-lib book. clean tight copy. From Publishers Weekly: Carolyn Hailston is a typical child of the English upper-middle class who works in a West End art gallery and shares a flat with Toni, a secretary to a Member of Parliament. On a trip to Prague to take a course in painting restoration, Carolyn becomes involved with an attractive Czech dissident and through him is arrested by the secret police. Only when she has confessed to spying is Carolyn allowed to leave the country and return home. Carolyn's father is an ambitious government minister; when the Czechs try to force Carolyn to obtain secret defense information from him, blackmail and murder are only two of the inevitable, unpleasant consequences. BBC political editor Scott brings his knowledge of Czech activities in Britain to bear here; co-author Allan may be responsible for the almost ingenuous tone of the narrative. This is at first irritating, but it soon serves to invest this thriller with a supremely sinister air: what starts off as a touching love story becomes a nightmare of suspense that readers will find difficult to put down.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. Sir Thomas Wyatt (1503-1542), 'the first great English lyric poet', remains one of the most popular writers of Henry VIII's court, and the most romantic, given his entanglement with Anne Boleyn, which resulted -- legend has it -- in some of his most passionate and vulnerable poems. This book contains a representative selection of the work: all the best-loved poems and many lesser-known pieces which illuminate a complex and sophisticated sensibility. Hardiman Scott sees Wyatt as a modern poet before his time and demonstrates the impact he and his younger contemporary the Earl of Surrey had on the development of English poetry. Wyatt introduced the sonnet, terza rima and other Italian verse forms into English and invented forms and processes of his own.
