Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. pp. iv, 312, [1 leaf]errata. 1 text illus. 19th century half calf, rebacked (corners & edges worn, light foxing to outer leaves, poor inking on p. 24 with loss of legibility of first word at beginning of 5 lines). armorial bookplate of Edmond Van Cruyce. First Edition. Sharp apprenticed as a surgeon with William Cheselden, and is believed to have had a hand in the preparation of the latter's great work, the Osteographia (1733). He had an extensive practice, was elected to the Royal Societies of London and Paris, was a personal friend of Voltaire, and is credited with having introduced improvements in several surgical instruments. The present account of his winter tour through Italy in 1765-66 for health reasons, found some favour with Samuel Johnson, but embroiled Sharp in a literary controversy with Joseph Baretti, one of the best know Italian literati of his day. "One of the most outspoken and critical accounts of Italian life to be published in England in the eighteenth century, presenting a thoroughly jaundiced view of the country, but not mere invective." (Pine-Coffin) The letters were written from Venice, Naples, Rome, Padua, Florence, Bologna, and Turin. Cox I p. 137. Pine-Coffin 7654.
