No Binding. Zustand: Near Fine. First Edition. An Engraving By Sherwin, Nicely Colored, 11" X 8 1/2". One Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. John Key…se Sherwin (1751 -1790) Was An English Engraver And History-Painter. Sherwin Was Born At East Dean In Sussex. His Father Was A Wood-Cutter Employed In Shaping Bolts For Shipbuilders, And The Son Followed The Same Occupation Till His Seventeenth Year, When, Having Shown An Aptitude For Art By Copying Some Miniatures, He Was Adopted By His Father's Landlord, William Mitford. Sherwin Was Sent To Study In London, First Under John Astley, And Then For Three Years Under Francesco Bartolozzi - For Whom He Is Believed To Have Executed A Large Portion Of The Plate Of Clytie, After Annibale Carracci, Published As The Work Of His Master. Sherwin Entered As A Student Of The Royal Academy, And Gained A Silver Medal, And In 1772 A Gold Medal For His Painting Of "Coriolanus Taking Leave Of His Family". From 1774 Till 1780 He Was An Exhibitor Of Chalk Drawings And Of Engravings In The Royal Academy. Establishing Himself In St James's Street As A Painter, Designer And Engraver, He Attained Popularity And Began To Mix In Fashionable Society. His Drawing Of The "Finding Of Moses", A Work Of But Slight Artistic Merit, Which Introduced Portraits Of The Princess Royal Of England And Other Leading Ladies Of The Aristocracy, Hit The Public Taste, And, As Reproduced By His Burin, Sold Largely. In 1785 He Succeeded William Woollett As Engraver To The King, And He Also Held The Appointment Of Engraver To The Prince Of Wales. His Professional Income Rose To About £12,000 A Year; But He Was Constantly In Pecuniary Difficulties, For He Was Shiftless, Indolent, And Without Method, Open-Handed And Even Prodigal In His Benefactions - And Prodigal, Too, In Less Reputable Directions, For He Became A Reckless Gambler, And Habits Of Intemperance Grew Upon Him.[1] He Did However Have A Notable Student, John Thomas Smith Who Trained With Him For Three Years. Sherwin Died In Extreme Penury On 24 September 1790 - According To George Steevens, The Editor Of Shakespeare, At The Hog In The Pound, An Obscure Alehouse In Swallow Street, Or, As Stated By His Pupil J.T. Smith, In The House Of Robert Wilkinson, A Printseller In Cornhill. It Is As An Engraver That Sherwin Is Most Esteemed; And It May Be Noted That He Was Ambidextrous, Working Indifferently With Either Hand Upon His Plates. His Drawing Is Correct, His Line Excellent And His Textures Are Varied And Intelligent In Expression. Such Of His Plates As The "Holy Family" After Nicholas Poussin, "Christ Bearing The Cross" After Murillo, The Portrait Of The Marquis Of Buckingham After Thomas Gainsborough And That Of Pitt Occupy A High Place Among The Productions Of The English School Of Line-Engravers. He Also Worked After Pine, Dance And Kauffman. Engraved By John Keyse Sherwin (illustrator).

2pp., 8vo. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Addressed to 'Dear Sherwin'. He assures him of his desire to 'assist in seconding [his] wishes', explaining regarding the circumstances: 'I suppose ye honest Gentleman whom the Advertisement concerns, must have been the King's Engraver, tho' you do not say so, nor doe…s the Advertisement import it. I cannot but wish that you had yourself found out to whom Application is to be made upon this Occasion, for I am quite in the dark as to that necessary Article; and, as I sincerely wish you Success, I must hope that you have other Irons in the Fire, and that you have not depended totally upon me, uninform'd as I am of every particular concerning the Business in question.' He continues in the same firm tone, explaining the circumstances under which he would be pleased to send a letter of recommendation.

Framed and Glazed. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. ORIGINAL 18th century engraving of 1775 by the most famous and father of the Political cartoons and caricature William Hogarth. This original COPPER engraving corresponds in size exactly with the Metropolitan Museum example 37 x 29 cm seen online. The British Museum example is…just slightly smaller width if they have measured correctly? But the height is 37 cm, the same. This rare example is in an old mount and an older period (19th early 20th century) Hogarth Frame. There is a little browning to top right hand edge off the plate but within margin are, but not detracting, several tiny hairline splits seen when viewed closely at edge on left. The margins may be larger on this cannot see without removing from the frame, but do not wish to do this and remove the original backing. A LOVELY example of this RARE early Hogarth. Uncoloured as issued. 1775 * The sitter was a lace-maker and politician and a good friend of Hogarth. Published and printed by the artists wife Jane 11 years after his death and borrowed from the subject from the original cartoon. William Hogarth (illustrator).

Stipple engraving, printed in colours. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and minor foxing. Trimmed to plate mark on all sides. A beautifully coloured print picturing the sorrowful exodus of two families from a picturesque English village. This fine image is one of a pair of plates by Sherwin (its companio…n is entitled "The Happy Village") contrasting the conflicting fortunes of a country village. A pupil of the accomplished engraver Francesco Bartolozzi and the painter John Astley, John Keyse Sherwin was a popular English engraver and talented draughtsman. He also trained at the Royal Academy, where he exhibited a number of highly acclaimed chalk drawings between 1774 and 1784. In addition to producing numerous prints after renowned artists, such as Joshua Reynolds, Angelica Kauffman, Thomas Gainsborough and Nicolas Poussin, Sherwin engraved several of his own works, including The Happy Village and the The Deserted Village. Although his original plates were well received, he primarily established his reputation with the images he engraved after other artists. In 1785, he was appointed engraver to the king, and he later became engraver to the Prince of Wales. Based vaguely on Goldsmith's poem, "The Deserted Village" of 1770, in which the poet deplores country villages that die while private estates flourish, Sherwin's group actually depicts a highly dramatic moment of quite mixed emotions, for in contrast to the understandably gloomy adults, the three children in the group gleefully begin the journey. This color printed, stipple engraving is the French edition of the Sherwin's touching image. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography.
