Es war in dieser Zeit, daß Orissa zum ersten Mai in seiner Geschichte von einer e…inzigen Dynastie beherrscht wurde, die das weite Gebiet an der Ost-küste Indiens kontrollierte. Diese Periode ist gekennzeichnet durch eine stufenweise Integration zahlreicher früherer regionaler Fürstentümer und kleiner Königreiche, die in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten in dem Gebiet Orissas existierten. Anantavarman Codagangadeva (1078 bis 1152 n.Chr.), der machtige Herrscher der Späten Östlichen Gangas, dehnte sein Reich von seinem kleinen väterlichen Stammland in Kalinga im nördlichen Andhra Pradesh im Norden bis an den Fluß Hooghly (Bhagirath), einen Seitenfluß des Ganges, und im Süden bis an den Fluß Godavari (Gautamlganga) aus.
