The sheet music was published in New York by Remick Music Corporation in 1930. IMSLP gives the plate number as 1142 and the key as E-flat major for voice and piano. Two states of the 1930 printing are documented. In one, Sidney Clare is credited as lyricist and Sam H. Stept as composer. In the other, the songwriting credit is shared by Clare, Stept and the singer Bee Palmer, who introduced the song. ASCAP records list only Clare and Stept, so the Palmer credit appears to have been dropped or never formally registered. Some printings carry performer photographs on the cover: Bee Palmer is associated with the original, and at least one copy names singer Mildred M. Hunt. The song kept its 1930 copyright through later reissues. A Remick printing tied to the 1951 film Lullaby of Broadway still bears the 1930 date, so a 1930 copyright line alone doesn't distinguish an original printing from a later one. The original printings are generally the standard folio of the period, with cover, music pages and a back page.The song is in the classic Tin Pan Alley form of a verse followed by a refrain. Its subject is a love affair ending after years together. The narrator accepts the parting with a show of good grace and wishes the departing partner well, asking only one thing: that once gone, they won't be spoken ill of. Its blend of wistfulness and wry dignity, together with Stept's easy-swinging melody, made it one of the best-known "leaving" songs of the era. Its relaxed tempo and repetitive, conversational hook suited both dance bands and jazz singers. It became a standard almost immediately. Dance-band recordings followed in early 1931, including a Harmony recording by an orchestra recorded under the Sam Lanin name. One source credits the first recording to Gene Austin, though accounts of the early recordings differ. The song's later life was extensive. Billie Holiday took it into the jazz repertoire. It turned up in the 1949 film House of Strangers. Johnnie Ray charted with it briefly in 1953. The Mills Brothers recorded it with Tommy Dorsey, and Bing Crosby recorded it in 1957. Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra included it on swing albums in 1960 and 1961, and singers from Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae to Harry Connick Jr. have recorded it since. The song's long recording history, and the dispute over Bee Palmer's part in writing it, give original 1930 Remick copies a particular interest for collectors.…

Cover reproduces a film production number showing Cantor (Brasselle) performing before a chorus line and a flag-draped backdrop. "Ma! (He's Making Eyes at Me)," a Cantor signature tune written in 1921 by Sidney Clare and Con Conrad, was among the standards Cantor himself sang on the film soundtrack. It was written by Lew Brown and Sidney Clare and has been recorded by dozens of major performers; it was a hit for the Ink Spots in1949, and Ricky Nelson in 1960. It was used in the 1951 Film I'd Climb the Highest Mountain. 4 Sheets of music plus covers. Scan is attached--it's bigger than the scanner. This piece was made fomous by Jack Smith 'The Whispering Baritone' This copy is a trifle dog eared with one or two closed tears.This piece of music came from a substantial library amassed by Maude Beerbohm Tree and later added to by her daughters Viola (1884-1938 and Felicity (1894-1978) Helen Maud Holt (5 October 1863 - 7 August 1937), professionally known as Mrs Beerbohm Tree and later Lady Tree, was an English actress. She was the wife of the actor Herbert Beerbohm Tree and the mother of Viola Tree, Felicity Tree and Iris Tree. After early stage appearances beginning in 1883, Mrs Tree married and established a theatrical partnership with her husband, in which they appeared in revivals of classic plays and productions of new plays, first at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket and then at Her Majesty's Theatre. Her performances in serious roles were well received, but she was most celebrated for her work in comedy, from Shakespeare to new works by Wilde and others. After her husband's death in 1917, Lady Tree continued to act steadily for almost two decades more until towards the end of her life, in plays and some films, making her last stage appearance in 1935.
