PB. Zustand: very good, wraps (softcover). 111pp ISBN 0974148806 No other mountain is climbed by so many people nor so much loved and protected as Grand Monadnock located near Jaffrey, Dublin, Fitzwilliam and Troy, New Hampshire. Yet the granite bald peak with more stature than size rises only 3,165 feet above sea level. Grand Monadnock was a sacred mountain to the Native Americans, a fascination for Thoreau and Emerson, a resort for 19th century Bostonians and New Yorkers, and a wonder to cherish and preserve. Prominent in the surrounding landscape, this book details the many trails to the rocky top, the story behind the name Monadnock, the geological formation, and the era of taverns and inns. You will read of the literature and arts inspired by the form and function of this captivating mountain, its calming and healing properties, and what lovers of Grand Monadnock say about this extraordinary peak that has affected so many people. I recommend this title to prepare you for a visit to this enchanting mountain and the surrounding area in Southwestern New Hampshire near the home of Ray Boas, Bookseller. Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 86 pages with table, photographs and index. Oblong small octavo (7" x 9") bound in original publisher's stapled wrappers. Signed by both authors. From the library of Lothar Schmid. (Linde 0880) Copy number 9. First edition. Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, including their international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played. The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. There was also a zonal tournament for women in Mar del Plata, in 1969, won by the Brazilian Ruth Cardoso. Silvia Kot from Argentina placed second. In 1967 the first edition of the open tournament was organized. In 1969 it became an annual event. The first edition in 1928 attracted seventeen contestants. Roberto Grau of Argentina scored clear first with 13.5 of 16. Luis Argentino Palau another Argentinian was a full point behind for second. The Brazilian, Joao De Souza Mendes, placed third with 11.5. Vicente Tulio Romano and Carlos Hugo Maderna shared fourth. Cauby Pulcherio held sixth with 10.5. Benito H Villegas captured the next spot. Lothar Maximilian Lorenz Schmid (10 May 1928 - 18 May 2013) was a German chess grandmaster. He was born in Radebeul near Dresden into a family who were the co-owners of the Karl May Press, which published the German Karl May adventure novels. He was best known as the chief arbiter at several World Chess Championship matches, in particular the 1972 encounter between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky at Reykjavic. He was also an avid collector of chess books and paraphernalia. It was reputed that he owned the largest known private chess library in the world, as well as a renowned collection of chess art, chess boards and chess pieces from around the globe. Condition: Signed by both author on title. Lothar Schmid's book plate to front wrapper verso. Edge wear with bumped corners, lightly soiled, some age toning to pages else very good. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine condition. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No dust jacket, as issued. True First Edition. Privately Published, 2018. INSCRIBED to the AUTHOR'S MOTHER and SIGNED by him. The inscription reads, in part: "Mom. Hope you enjoy this (it) started as an outline, and just continued to grow with my progress and a TON of love and support along the way. Thanks for your love and encouragement All my love 2018 (signed) Kyle." This is the TRUE first edition published in 2018, four years before the 2022 Ballast books edition. The author is a retired US Navy Rear Admiral and current President and CEO of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. Bound in the original black laminated boards, lettered in bright white, and with a full color photo on the front cover of the author hugging his mother, and with a quotation from Charles Krauthammer on the back. From the publisher of the 2022 edition: "Why me? This is what most people would wonder when suddenly faced with a life-altering hardship. Rear Admiral Kyle Cozad was no different -- at first. However, only days after a freak accident that left him largely paralyzed from the waist down, he chose to view his circumstances with unfailing optimism. That positive attitude, combined with his sheer grit and resilience, helped him do what his neurosurgeon said would be impossible: walk again. In RELENTLESS POSITIVITY Cozad chronicles his career in naval aviation, reflecting on his roles as the Navy's senior leader in the White House Situation Room during the Osama Bin Laden raid and as the commander of the Joint Task Force in Guantanamo Bay. He even relates his experience as commander of the Naval Education and Training Command when the training center suffered a terrorist attack. Then, Cozad recounts how his whole life was turned upside-down when an accident seriously damaged his spinal cord. With raw vulnerability, he describes his incredible journey of recovery and rehabilitation, focusing on the key factors that helped him along the way: his family, the U.S. Navy, and the sense of purpose he developed after his injury. Whether you have experienced a life-altering injury of your own or are simply looking for the inspiration needed to overcome a seemingly insurmountable challenge, regardless of your profession or place in your life, this book is a must-read. As Rear Admiral Kyle Cozad says, 'Life throws each one of us curveballs that we never, ever expect. It's how we adjust ourselves to overcome those curveballs that really defines who we are as individuals.'". INSCRIBED to his MOTHER. True First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine condition/No dust jacket, as issued. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 150pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping. NOT a library discard (illustrator).…
