The striking illustrations, all of clouds, are based on paintings by Rudolf Cronau, who in turn relied on photogra…phs by the Hydrographer's office and others, and the lithography is by the pre-eminent American printer, L. Prang & Co. of Boston. Captain Sigsbee, and later Rear Admiral Sigsbee, the author, was the commander of the ill-fated USS Maine, which exploded in Havana Harbor in 1898, an event that was the catalyst for the Spanish-American War. Besides that particular event, however, Sigsbee was an influential oceanographer, and he developed the Sigsbee sounding machine which became standard equipment in deep water oceanography for fifty years afterward. This is a hard-to-find title and one still useful as a simple, straighforward understanding of the basic taxonomy of cloud formations (a picture is worth a thousand words), but above all else, quite a beautiful collection of unusual illustrations. Wear to the cover, with a few spots of soiling on the front board, a surface abrasion chip on the rear cover, and evidence of repair along joints, which have a slightly gooped up quality. Interior is tight and generally clean, with light age toning.
