Contemporary full leather well scuffed and abraded; spine label worn and darkened with gilt lettering difficult to discern. Blank prelims missing, i.e. chipped and stained title leaf immediately opposite front pastedown; shallow margin chipping to other leaves; antiquarian ink ownership inscriptions and other writing on early and late leaves with color pencil underlining amongst text; toning/foxing prevalent throughout. Binding remains firm. "Preface to the First Edition" (dated June 22, 1818) on pages v-vii; "Preface to the Second Edition" on pages ix-xii; primary text "The House Surgeon and Physician" reviewing afflictions and treatments on pages 1-176; "American Remedies" featured on pages 177-252: "Contents" (more accurately an alphabetical index) on pages 253-280; "Appendix" on pages 281-288. First published anonymously in Hartford in 1818. Author is likely Dr. William Meigs Hand (1789-1820) who was born in New Haven County, Connecticut but resided, died, and is interred in Middlesex County, Connecticut.
