Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. No dust jacket. Presumed first edition/first printing. Sewn binding. Cloth over boards. 359 p. Illustrations (some in color). Suggested Reading. Index. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for providing power projection, using the mobility of the United States Navy to, by Congressional mandate, rapidly-deliver combined-arms task forces on land, at sea and in the air. The U.S. Marine Corps is one of the four armed service branches in the Department of Defense and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The Marine Corps has been a component of the U.S. Navy since 1834, working closely with naval forces for training, transportation, and logistics. Two battalions of Continental Marines were formed on 10 November 1775 in Philadelphia as a service of infantry troops capable of fighting for independence both at sea and land. The Marine Corps has distinguished itself as it has served in the majority of American wars and armed conflicts, and attained prominence when its theories and practices of amphibious warfare formed the cornerstone of the Pacific theater.

"This aims to be the most beautiful and comprehensive word-and-picutre book ever produced about the United States Marine Corps. It was conceived in Virginia, published in Connecticut, printed in Hong Kong, and distributed from California. More than a year of many people's time has gone into researching and writing these essays and locating the historical pictures and producing the new ones. Among the participants who have brought this book to life are two commandants of the Marine Corps. Marines who have fought in World War II and every war since then, and civilians who care deeply about the Corps. The result, we hope, is a book that will be read with great interest, browsed through again and again, and treasured for years and generations to come. The U.S. Marine Corps has defended and fought for our people ever since the Corps was born on 10 November 1775, even before the Continental Congress approved Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence. Today, if you are abroad and walk into an American embassy, the first person you are likely to face is a Marine. If you watch on TV as the president of the United States lands on the White House lawn, the pilot of that helicopter is a Marine. And when war threatens, the armed service that lives the motto "First to Fight!" is the United States Marine Corps. The Corps is a relatively small service but it really has fought from the shores of Tripoli to the halls of the Montezumas. And in other places with strange names - Belleau Wood, Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, Chosin, Da Nang - made meaningful because Americans in Marine uniform had died there. As we write these words, our country is at peace. But you need only think of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941; the North Korean attack against the South in 1950: the Cuban missile crisis of 1962; or the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. To protect us from such surprises, all of our armed services are standing by. And one of the best - one that yields to no other - is the Marine Corps. The Marines' greeting is "Semper Fi." They use it all the time. It means Always Faithful, and that is what the Corps is. If this book is faithful to the best of the Marine Corps, it will meet the challenge we set for ourselves." - Edwin Howard Simmons, Editor-in-Chief and J. Robert Moskin, Editor.
