The volumes contain multiple works by Ware, each of which was originally published separately and in bindings of different sizes. To create two uniform volumes, the binder neatl…y trimmed the margins of pages that were originally on larger sheets, and rebacked those printed on smaller sheets, so that all pages in this compilation would be of the same dimensions. The final product is professional, attractive, and sturdy. Overall an extensively repaired set with numerous pages which have tears and missing portions repaired. Externally, the volumes are in very good condition, with scuffed edges and tiny notations on the spines in white ink (likely call numbers from a library, but these copies were almost certainly not in circulation). The covers' front hinges have small cracks forming up from the bottom, but not substantially affecting the overall integrity of the binding. Many of the pages are toned and have age-related blemishes, and occasionally, water stains. Numerous pages' bottom corners or gutters are torn or otherwise badly worn and have been professionally repaired with acid-free tape and tissue paper. Page 96 in the first volume has a large, flourishing ink notation by an early owner. In the second volume, the binder's rebacking is starting to peel off the margin of one of the pages in the section on Kilalla bishops. LACKS pages 45-50 in the work on the bishops (affects the part on County Derry), and page 51 is torn at the bottom. OFFERED AS-IS. Otherwise, the volumes are square and sturdy and make a nice appearance on the shelf. Includes THE AFFAIRS OF IRELAND (pub. 1705), THE WRITERS OF IRELAND (1704), THE PRELATES OF IRELAND (1704), and THE ANTIQUITIES AND HISTORY OF IRELAND (1705). Both volumes measure approx. 11.5" x 7.5". The second book contains a plate depicting church cemeteries, a plate of ecclesiastical insignia, and a small map of Ireland.

Anglo-Irish historian Sir James Ware (1594-1666) originally published these works in 1633; this is the 1809 reprint by Hibernia Press for The Dublin Society (now "The Royal Dublin Society"). Held by all major institutions in…the UK, and two in America, but rare in the trade. Quercus notes its presence in the Royal Collection, a copy gifted to the Prince of Wales in 1810. The authors represented are Edmund Spencer (1552-1599), noted for his "Fairie Queen"); the Welsh historian Meredith Hamner (1543-1604); and the martyred Edmund Campion (1540-1581, canonized in 1970). Two volumes; large, heavy octavos (almost five pounds in weight each). Added postage will be a given. Presented in a modern rebind with marbled paper covers, leather tips and spine; four raised bands on the spine; black labels with titling in gilt; volume numbers blindstamped on the spine. Clean texts, and while spotted throughout, they remain nicely readable today. Volume One contains a 22-page listing of the 1809 subscribers and booksellers, Ware's original dedication, and Spencer's "View of the State of Ireland" (266 pages); followed by Campion's "Historie" - 204 pages, with an errata page "In the original text of Campion." Volume Two has a frontis engraving (from the Publisher to the Society). Doctor Hamner's "Chronicle of Ireland" has 410 pages, and is followed by Henry Marleburrough's 32-page "Continuation" of Hamner's work.
