This August, 1923 edition of "The Wide World " magazine is in "fair" condition -- the interior text block still flexible, complete, easily read, and verging on "very good." HOWEVER, both front and rear wraps are detached (though still present.) That is to say, THEY'RE NO LONGER…ATTACHED. Contains an 8-page account by renowned cowboy author and former Pinkerton detective Charles Siringo concerning an episode in which he went to work in February, 1895, posing as "Lee Roy Davis," to investigate the theft of $10,000 worth of gold from the Treadwell Mining Company, near Juneau, Alaska -- believed to have been an inside job. The Treadwell Mine, on Douglas Island, did indeed exist (1881-1922), and did indeed use a chlorination process to free the gold from its pyrite matrix, as described by Siriingo here. But most summary Siringo biographies make no mention of this successful Alaskan outing, possibly because it pales in comparison to his more high-profile work infiltrating Butch Cassisy's Wild Bunch, etc. (In 1892, Siringo was assigned to a case in the Idaho Panhandle for the Mine Owners' Protective Association. He assumed the identity of Charles Leon Allison, working as a shoveler in the Gem Mine. After14 months, which included the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho labor strike of 1892, Siringo's undercover work and testimony helped convict 18 union leaders. For 4 years starting in 1899, posing under the aliases "Charles L. Carter," "Chas. Tony Lloyd", and later as "Harry Blevins", Siringo successfully infiltrated outlaw Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch, working at times with Tom Horn, and closing the Pacific Train Robbery case, among others.) Single issue of the 1923 magazine here reduced from $100. Illustrated by W.C. Nicolson (illustrator).
