In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. James T. Phillips. Notes on the Caroline, Marshall, Mariana, and Palau (Pelew) Islands under Japanese Mandate. Printed for the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce, 1944. 9"x 6", 14pp. Original wrappers. Provenance: Pamphlet Collection, Library of Congress, with their mostly-faded rubber stamp on the front rig…ht corner, and their 10mm "LC" perforated stamp at bottom center front. There is also a rubber stamped reception date of the LC for April 1945 on the back of the front wrapper noting the item was a gift from the author. GOOD copy, 5/10. There is some bumping to the top right corner that goes through the pamphlet, as well as an old vertical crease going through the pamphlet, probably from being folded and stuck into a pocket. [++] This is an odd publication, published by Tice with printed date of 15 September 1944 and then, I guess, printed for redistribution by the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce (printed date 6 October 1944 just weeks later. There is no printing/publishing info here to know exactly when this doc was printed, except that it went through channels (probably for copyright) and received by the LC in April 1945. [++] The pamphlet was intended to supply business info to Honolulu business people "who may be considering the expansion of their business, either to the areas referred to or because of the effect of business there on production and distribution in Honolulu." How this was possible when there was martial law in Hawaii and a no-trade rule with Japan, I don't know. [++] What is odd is that there is nearly no mention at all of military action there is a statement on page 8 that the Japanese claimed that "no forced labor was necessary" at Palau (Pelilieu) oe Saipan, which was absolutely not the case. Labor was conscripted, and enforced, and the workers paid little or no money with severe consequences for not working. Plus there was heavy indoctrination, resulting in many hundreds of civilians who jumped from high cliffs in Saipan to avoid being captured by the Marines there were also armed soldiers ensuring that the civilians did this. [++] There's quite a bit of unexpected data here, showing export totals, the countries of origin for works, pay scales, and a lot more. [++] Getting back to the oddness factor, the lcations for info presented here is areading list of terrific conflicts in 1944: those islands/atolls/groups mentioned that were or were going to be areas of heavy action include Saipan (captured July 1944), Tinian (August 44), Guam (Aug 44), Kwajalein (Jan-Fe 44), Anguar (Sept-Oct 44), Tarawa (Gilberts) Nov 43, Truk (Feb 44), Einiwetok (Feb 44), Tinian (July-Aug 44), Palau including Peleliu (Sept-Nov 44). Especially Peleliu. Again, no mention of fighting whatsover in the pamphlet. I don't understand how this is possible. I guess this was useful info for when the war was over and it was time to slip in and take control of the biz situation.
