The full title is: 'An Address to the Quarterly, Monthly and Preparative Meetings, and the Members thereof, composing the Yearly Meeting of Friends, held in Philadelphia, By the Committee appointed at the late Yearly Meeting to have charge of the Subject of Slavery.' 12pp, 12mo. Pamphlet in (original?) plain brown wraps. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Begins with two pages of extracts from the minutes, 17 May 1839, regarding the setting up of the committee on 'the deeply interesting subject of Slavery', with reference to 'Benjamin Price, Jr. Clerk' and 'Deborah F. Wharton, Clerk.' The address itself, 'Signed by direction and on behalf of the Committee, by | John Jackson, Clerk', is eight pages long. Towards the beginning it notes that 'Many of our forefathers were slave-holders, and the unrighteous practice of holding our fellow-creatures in bondage, was not then forbidden by our discipline.' The change of policy is described, with reference to 'Anthony Benezet and John Woolman'. Later the address notes: 'The advancement of this righteous concern, and the increase of light upon the subject of human rights, are causing this system of iniquity to totter to its base. Hence, under the influence of fearful excitement, many are putting forth their strength to impede the progress of principles, which, if ultimately triumphant, will break the fetters of the slave. A part of the trading interests at the North is evidently involved with those of the South, and an influence is in this way exerted against the onward course of Emancipation; thus light and darkness antagonize each other.' And later still: 'Within a few years, great events hae occurred in relation to Slavery, and much light has been spread on the subject. The experience derived from Emancipation in the British West Indies, has opened a new era. [.] while we have painful evidence that a great body of slave-holders are influenced by injustice and cruelty [.] There are many whose consciences are burdened by a system which they derived from their ancestors, [.] the money of the slave-trader is temptingly held up before them; [.] they cannot separate the tender ties of family connexion among their slaves; they dare not receive the price of blood. [.] We believe they are fervently desiring the deliverance of master and slave, from the bondage to which both are subjected. Their hearts have bounded with joy at the success of Emancipation in the British West Indies; it has opened a door of hope thaty they also may be legally permitted to prove the advantage of requited labour, over that which is extorted by the lash of the oppressor. With the surge of interest in the slave trade attention has lately been directed at Simond and Hankey, a 'past constituent' of the NatWest Bank. These two items are nice artefacts of the firm. Both are in good condition, lightly aged, and laid out in the same way, with the bill written out on one side of a 22.5 x 9 cm slip of laid paper. One is for 'Deux Cent Livres Sterling a trente quatre Sols neuf deniers de gros' and the other for 'Cent Soixante Sterling a Trente quatre Sols dix deniers de gros'. Both drawn on 'Messrs. Vernede & Co'. Each signed 'Pre: Simond' and both endorsed by 'Jean Hankey', with instructions in French for the bill of £160 to be paid to the account of 'Messieurs Gme. Van Brienen & fils' and that of £200 to 'Messieurs Geo. Clifford & fils'.…

Zustand: Appears Very Fine. A copper medal commemorating the passage of the United Kingdom's Slave Trade Act 1807, produced for distribution in Sierra Leone. One side depicts a European and an African man shaking hands and reads, "WE ARE ALL BRETHREN" and exergue: "SLAVE TRADE ABOLISHED BY GREAT BRITAIN 1807". The reverse is inscribed in Arabic and reads, translated, "Sale of slaves prohibited in 1807, Christian era, in the reign of George the Third; verily we are all brothers." The 1807 act did not abolish slavery, but rather criminalized British participation in the African branch of the slave trade; it was enforced by the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron in the so-called Blockade of Africa. The squadron was based in Freetown, Sierra Leone's capital, and would bring freed people from intercepted slave ships to the city. Copper medal measuring 1 ½ inches in diameter.…

Neat ink manuscript on a single oblong leaf, 7-3/4" x 4-1/8." Very Good. Docketed on verso: "M.R. Foster | Receipt for John $300." The place of execution of this document is not stated. The large Ford clan in Kentucky makes it a likely candidate.

Collated complete. Boards rubbed with some spotting and dampstains; cloth on spine fraying. Front cloth joint splitting but holding; pages foxed; endpapers dampstained. Unidentified numerical ex-library stamp on top of p. 3, else free of institutional markings. Overall, a Very Good copy. Inscribed on front cover: "From the Honble. John Q. Adams," who served as U.S. President at the time of publication and contributed the introductory comment published on p. 3. This inscription written on behalf of the President, whose hand suffered from a tremor later in his career. Volume documenting the challenges the U.S. government faced trying to enforce an 1808 ban on the international slave trade which involved acomplicated six-year-long case in which three American slave ships (the Constitution, the Louisa and the Merino) were seized for transporting enslaved people between Havana, Cuba, Pensacola, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama. More than 100 enslaved people were seized in the capture of the ships. At the conclusion of the case in 1825, only 65 of them were accounted for (the others died, escaped or were simply lost in the broader institution of slavery). The 65 remaining humans were sold at auction, and the slave traders were not punished, other than the financial loss of their ships and cargo. While the enforcement of the 1808 ban may have been a deterrent for some slave traders, the National Archives estimates that 1.2 million slaves were brought into the U.S. illegally during the first half of the 19th century. Provenance: We have been unable to establish which library this came out of, though we have checked each copy-specific description of the examples listed in OCLC, none of which are described as being inscribed by or for Adams. The previous owner states that he purchased this copy from a Parisian dealer in the 1980s.
