CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 76th NY Infantry was raised from the small towns and farms of central New York State. During its three years of service, it fought with the Army of the Potomac in most of the battles from Fredericksburg to Petersburg. At Gettysburg, the 76th was at the right flank of the entire army, and suffered terrible casualties as a result. The men of the regiment were mustered out January 1865, at which point the reenlisted soldiers and recruits transferred to the 147th NY. The 76th NY Infantry is recognized as one of the Fox 300 Fighting Regiments.
