[From foreword] Jochen Gerz is an artist who has mastered the methods and tactics of the visual arts and yet, at the same time, foils them; he is an artist whose position on the open border between the visual, the literary and performance is rightly defined as a no man's land "between the chairs", for he pursues a strategy which assimilates daily experiences with the "media world" and severely questions them with regard to the way they work. The skepticism with which this is done manifests itself in the many parts, as well as, the ambiguity of the images and literary fragments which are intended to engender associations. The exhibition, which is documented in this catalogue to the greatest possible extent, is intended not only to highlight Gerz's art but also to make his way of working within the context of art and in connection with the public more familiar. . . The reason for organizing an exhibition of the photographic work of Jochen Gerz in the Neues Museum Weserburg was the conferral of the "Roland-Preisfur Kunst Im bffentlichen Raum" (Roland- Prize for Art in Public Space), which was awarded for the first time in Bremen in 1990. Esther and Jochen Gerz's disappearing sculpture in Hamburg-Harburg, in which the memory of the victims of National Socialism is conceived as something that still bares repeated consideration and as not yet relegated to history, which caused the jury to ask the artist to think about the use of sculpture in public space and, if possible, to develop strategies against its mere utilization. His cooperation with his students in Saarbrucken to create what is in fact an invisible, yet unavoidable Monument Against Racism, only confirmed that the jury had made the right choice.
