In the last stan…za there is a reference to hemp which may well be alluding to the first battle of Lexington, also known as "Battle of the Hemp Bales". First published in 1850, under the title, "G…wine to run all night" and "Camptown Races", the lyrics are in the 19th century Afro-American dialect. It's the story of a black man who goes to the racetracks at Camptown, Pennsylvania, to bet on a horse. He bets on the bob-tail horse and wins a "pocket full of tin". Thomas M.
