Scoresby, William (*1789 nahe Whitby, Yorkshire - 1857 Torquay). Britischer Seefahrer und Forscher, arbeitete zunächst als Walfänger, der zwischen 1803 und 1822 ca. 20 Reisen in nordische Gewässer machte. Im Jahr 1806 erreichte er mit dem Walfangschiff "Resolution" Grönland und Spitzbergen, die damals die höchste geographische Breite (81° 30' N)darstellten. In den Jahren 1817 und 1818 erforschte er Spitzbergen und landete 1822 als Erster an der Ostküste Grönlands, die er teilweise kartierte (Scoresbysund). Durch seine Untersuchungen erkannte er, dass Eis auch auf offener See entsteht und dass sich Packeis ununterbrochen von Spitzbergen bis Nowaja Semlja ausdehnt. Von 1839 bis 1852 veröffentlichte er seine Forschungsergebnisse über den Erdmagnetismus. Nach Beendigung der Reisetätigkeit studierte Scoresby in Cambridge Theologie.
