Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the history of various French measurement standards known as toises. By comparing remnants of these toises to more stable modern standards, the author establishes mathematical relationships between the different toises and highlights errors in measurements that have propagated through history. Along the way, the author also reveals data on the precise locations of several historical monuments, some of which have been lost to time. Of particular note are the author's findings regarding the investigation of the Paris Observatory's Gnomon, an astronomical instrument that allowed scientists of the past to calculate the Earth's size. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
