(1805), 123 pp. Très riches observations cliniques sur des maladies dues à des abus immoraux : cantharides, masturbations . La cantharide officinale, Lytta vesicatoria, est un insecte coléoptère de la famille des méloïdés. On l'appelle aussi mouche cantharide ou mouche espagnole ou encore mouche de Milan, bien que ce ne soit absolument pas une mouche d'un point de vue scientifique (diptère). Au xixe siècle, la récolte des cantharides officinales était assez répandue et rémunératrice. Mais une autre caractéristique a assuré la célébrité de la « mouche espagnole », c'est la propriété aphrodisiaque de la cantharidine. Depuis l'Antiquité, une poudre faite avec l'insecte est reconnue comme étant un stimulateur de l'érection. Cette réputation est surfaite mais surtout dangereuse. L'absorption de poudre de cantharide provoque une inflammation des voies urinaires. L'érection, pathologique, en est une conséquence parmi d'autres : émissions d'urines sanglantes, vomissements, douleurs abdominales. La surdose peut être mortelle (50 à 100 mg suffisent). D'après le spécialiste Yves Cambefort, « Son action principale est d'irriter l'urètre, ce qui peut en effet provoquer une forte érection et un gonflement du gland, par une excitation réflexe dont le point de départ se trouve dans les muqueuses urinaires enflammées. ». On retrouvait notamment de petites quantités de cette poudre dans les « dragées d'Hercule ». Le marquis de Sade utilisait à l'occasion des bonbons d'anis enrobés de poudre de cantharide qu'il offrait à ses partenaires. Il fut embastillé pour empoisonnement pour avoir offert des bonbons à la cantharide à quatre femmes lors d'une soirée, les effets n'étant pas ceux espérés. Le président Félix Faure, décédé à l'Élysée durant un rapport sexuel avec sa maîtresse en aurait été consommateur (ce qui expliquerait son décès).
