Card Covers. First Edition, First Printing. pp. [1], 2-63, + index. Octavo., measuring 16.5 x 24 cm. Original twice-stapled card covers with title in black, housed within repeating decorative borders. An unassuming but richly detailed promotional booklet, published for the benefit of prospective period settlers, offering highly descriptive accounts of various aspects of the once-bustling agricultural and industrial city of Portage la Prairie, located less than 100km West of the City of Winnipeg, sometimes referred to as the "island on the prairies." Prefaced with a brief outline of the city's founding, it is followed by six sections relating the various opportunities, amenities, and services available to the potential emigrant in various areas of concern: Finance, Real Estate and Insurance; Manufacturing Interests; Mercantile Interests; Hotels; Important Individuals; Routes to and from Portage la Prairie; The Press; Churches, Schools, Etc.; Summary of Industries; and Industrial Prospects. Each section details with remarkable thoroughness the various firms and industries operating in the city (often accompanied by brief historical sketches of persons and firms), the practicalities of obtaining land for settlement, and transport to the city by way of the various railway routes (the Canadian Pacific Railway, the Grand Trunk, etc.). It highlights lodgings (such as the Grand Pacific Hotel, Lorne House, or the Queen's Hotel), and provides an outline of the various Christian denominations present in the city, including the Church of England, the Presbyterian Church, the Methodist Church of Canada, the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Catholic Church, and the Baptist Church (alongside estimated populations of their respective flocks, their structures, and often histories of their founding). This is followed by details of educational facilities, possibilities for entertainment (e.g., The Bryon Troupe of Winnipeg, Miss Florence Gillette, etc.), and - chief above all - the potential commercial prospects. The text also outlines the various existing mercantile interests, including references to the Hudson's Bay Company, the Richardson Company, James Ashdown, et al. A remarkably vivid snapshot of the development of this once-important Western-Canadian city, a teeming centre of commercial and agricultural activity, and the settlement of Western-Canada at large. Rear covers rubbed with some minor loss to the right margin; binding remains firm and sound; rare occasional tide-mark to the margins of a few leaves else, contents remain remarkably well-preserved with bright, clean, and unmarked leaves; very good. Rare to be offered in commerce. See OCLC #290161085, which records six Canadian institutional holdings. See also Peel Citation No. 1104 (most unusually, while recorded in Peel's Bibliography of the Prairie Provinces, no extant copy appears to be held at Peel at the time of cataloguing). Although unattributed, the present offering was most likely authored by James Elder Steen, whom Peel notes moved to "Winnipeg and opened the publishing firm of Steen & Boyce, 1882; [and] wrote pamphlets descriptive of Winnipeg and all the towns of the Canadian Northwest; afterwards proprietor of Winnipeg Commercial Publishers".
