Biografía del autor: Stephen James Ferris (1835-1915) estudió arte en la Academia de Pensilvania y en París, con Jean Leon Gerome. Logró una considerable reputación por su arte tanto en América como en Europa. Stephen Ferris también trabajó durante veintiséis años como instructor de arte en la Escuela de Diseño para Mujeres de Filadelfia, ahora Moore College of Art. Ferris y su cuñado, Thomas Moran, estudiaron por primera vez el proceso de grabado en 1860 con el grabador y editor John Sartain. El primer grabado publicado de Stephen Ferris fue creado en 1875. Durante los años siguientes, creó muchos retratos y estudios de figuras excelentes en este medio.
