Stern is a brilliant examination of the famous literary scholar's work. The book was published by the University of North Carolina in 1981. This is the First Edition, and is inscribed and signed by the author on the title page. F. O. Matthiessen was a major literary scholar , specializing in mid 19th century American literature. He was the main driving force that established the concept of the American Renaissance, through his ground-breaking work on Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Whitman and Nathaniel Hawthorne. This was presented in his book, "American Renaissance: Art and Expression in the Age of Emerson and Whitman" (1941). He also wrote important work on T. S. Eliot, Alice James, Henry James, Henry James Sr., William James, Sarah Orne Jewett, and Sinclair Lewis. The following is an excerpt from the jacket write-up, which should indicate the aim of this book : "F. O. Matthiessen was a major literary critic and a distinguished teacher from 1930 to 1950. Despite his premature death, his extraordinary output of critical works constitutes a very important part of the development of twentieth-century American literary scholarship and criticism.
