Como sistema gráfico, es uno de los más abstractos y no icónicos jamás concebidos para la comunicación humana. Las letras consisten en haces de uno a cinco trazos rectos… paralelos idénticos, dispuestos en cuatro clases o grupos. El ogam se encuentra sobre todo en la superficie de objetos, normalmente piedras. En la actualidad existen algo menos de 500 piedras ogam, principalmente en Irlanda, pero también en Gales, Escocia, Inglaterra y la Isla de Man. A ellas hay que añadir unas dos docenas de objetos portátiles. Inventado tal vez en el siglo IV para escribir la lengua irlandesa primitiva, los siglos V-VII se consideran el periodo clásico de la escritura ogam. Sin embargo, el conocimiento del ogam nunca se perdió y la tradición de su uso continúa hasta nuestros días. En la Alta Edad Media, incluso se adoptó ocasionalmente en la escritura manuscrita. El presente volumen de la serie AELAW ofrece una introducción a lo que se sabe de este sistema de escritura y a cómo interpretar las inscripciones en ogam. Un censo de las inscripciones conocidas en la actualidad y una bibliografía concisa completan el volumen.
