Zustand: Good. Two sentence letter from Clement dated July 15, 1947 and written on the letterhead of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company of Durham, N. C. where Clement, an African American, was employed. Also included are two unsigned and undated typed drafts of what appear a possible reply by Stoney to the Clements letter. All three letters/drafts are browned and show some wear. 28 cm. Stoney, a white Southerner, had served as mayor of Charleston, South Carolina, from 1923-1931. Stoney apparently reacted unfavorably to the 1947 ruling by U. S. District Court Judge Julius Waites Waring that Democratic primaries could not be limited to white voters. Clement expressed surprise in his brief letter that ex-Mayor Stoney had denounced the ruling because ". we had always felt that you were liberal in your thinking and sincere in your past public expressions of desiring fairplay where my group was concerned." Stoney's drafts make it clear that he was never that kind of liberal and that his support for "fairplay" required strict segregation of the races. Stoney, also anti-New Deal, migrated to the Republican Party and was an energetic supporter of both Eisenhower and Goldwater.
