The sale catalogue of the auction of the library of Sir Richard Colt Hoare (1758-1838), 'probably the most choice collection of British topography ever formed', sold in 1883 over eight days by Sotheby, Wilkinson, and Hodge across 1971 lots. Hoare, an antiquary, made significant contributions to the travel literature of Wales with his translation of Gerald of Wales Giraldus de Barri, Itinerary of Archbishop Baldwin through Wales ad 1188 (1806), and through providing illustrations for William Coxe's Historical Tour of Monmouthshire (1801). An unquenchable bibliophile, Hoare donated his collection of Italian topographical and historical works to the British Museum in 1825, but in its place collected practically every book on the history and topography of the British Isles. The collection, housed at his estate of Stourhead, was dispersed in two heirloom sales, the one represented here, and another in 1887. Size: 8vo.…
