Zustand: Near Fine. The last edition of the famed "Blue Books," a series of directories to houses of prostitution in New Orleans' red-light district, Storyville. [96] pp., text printed in black and red. Perfect bound with string reinforcement sewn through three stab-holes, in publisher's pale blue wraps printed in red. Near Fine with light toning and trivial foxing to extremities, modest wear to covers, and light foxing to textblock edges and first and last two leaves. An unusually crisp copy of this scarce guidebook. Arceneaux Guidebooks to Sin p. 102. Prostitution wasn't a crime in turn of the century New Orleans but it was seen as vice and a public nuisance. Alderman Sidney Story sponsored a bill passed in 1898 to confine "immoral activities" to 38-block area just north of the French Quarter, and Storyville became a notorious red-light district for the next twenty years. During that time, guidebooks such as these were often available in barbershops and saloons. The Blue Book, published most years between 1900 and 1915, was compiled by Billy Struve, a newspaper reporter with intimate knowledge of the city's underworld. It lists brothels and individual women by race (white, black, octoroon) and contains extensive advertising for accoutrements of sin like cigars and liquor. On the third page is a notice that this guide must not be mailed; the distribution of suggestive material by the United States Postal Service was banned. A frank, fascinating journey into the adult side of The City That Care Forgot.
