With the bookplate of the German mathematician Constantin Carathédory (1873-1950) on the front pastedown; ink stamp on the title page verso of the Ducal Library of Gotha. A landmark in numismatic literature and the history of coin collecting. Magnificently illustrated with 118 extremely large woodcut medallion portraits of Roman, Carolingian, and Holy Roman emperors, surrounded by inscriptions in imitation of coins. Each portrait image is set within an elaborate ornamental frame with grotesques, putti, cherubs, and arrangements of fruit. The woodcut borders, signed R W (with a quill pen) and HR MD (with a wood engraver's knife) are, according to Nagler, the work of the Zürich woodcutter and painter Rudolf Wyssenbach (active 1545-1560) and Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch (1525-1571). The text pages, which also have woodcut borders, also feature elaborate decorative patterns, designed for intarsia and metalwork by Peter Flötner, and first printed in his "Kunstbuch"(Zurich, 1549). The title page border (signed C.S.) is by Christoph Schweitzer (active 1558-1562), and was possibly designed by Jos Murer (1530-1580). I. "The Most Accurate Likenesses of All of the Roman Emperors of the Eastern and Western Empires"(1559) SOLE EDITION of this masterpiece of book design by the Swiss publisher Andreas Gessner, inspired by the numismatic encyclopedia compiled by the antiquarian, goldsmith, architect, collector and antiquities dealer Jacopo Strada (1507-1588). The book shares strong affinities with Strada's great, unpublished, multi-volume thesaurus of coins and medals (about which see below), which had been commissioned by the German banker, collector, and art patron Hans Jacob Fugger (1516-1557). In 1553, Jacopo Strada had published an epitome of his growing numismatic collection in a quarto volume entitled "Epitome Thesauri Antiquitatum", which featured coin-sized (4 cm.) woodcuts of 391 of imperial coins from his collection. These were accompanied by letterpress transcriptions of the coins' inscriptions and biographies of the subjects. In 1557, Andreas Gessner printed a new edition of Strada's "Epitome", also with small woodcuts. For his monumental 1559 "Imagines"("The Most Accurate Likenesses of All of the Roman Emperors of the Eastern and Western Empires"), Gessner reprinted Strada's biographies and inscriptions. For the 118 woodcut medallion portraits, Gessner drew from the images in Strada's "Epitome" as well as the important coin books of Andrea Fulvio (1517), Johann Huttich (1534), and Guillaume Rouille (1553). He has also copied some actual coins. In his introduction to this 1559 volume, Andreas Gessner explains his motivations for producing this book of nearly life-sized Roman imperial portraits, executed in profile in the manner or coins and medals. Gessner tells us that he had been working for some time on portraits of the Roman emperors to be used as decoration -in the manner of Paolo Giovio- in dining rooms and banqueting halls. The grand, single-sheet portraits in the "Imagines" can now serve this function for purchasers wishing to decorate their own homes (presumably they are to serve as models for artists to render paintings.) The lives of the emperors, taken from Jacopo Strada's illustrated "Epitome" of his coin collection, will edify and provide grist for dinner conversation. For the antiquarian interested in numismatics, Gessner set out to improve upon earlier coin books, in which the coins and medals were illustrated by small woodcuts. These required keen eyesight to study. The much larger format of the "Imagines" has allowed for more accurate depictions of the emperors and, consequently, will make consultation of the portraits much easier. Gessner has divided his series into three "classes": the ancient emperors from Julius Caesar to Constantine; from Constantine to Charlemagne; and from Charlemagne to the reigning emperor, Ferdinand I. Although the last portrait is that of Ferdinand's brother and predecessor, Charles V (abdicated 1556, died 1558), the inscription reads "Charles reigns in the west Ferdinand in the east. How well is rule divided between two brothers!" I. The Paper Museum: Gessner's "Imagines" & Strada's "Magnum ac Novum Opus": "I have not limited myself merely to know the names and to recognize the portraits of the ancient personalities [depicted on the coins], but have learnt by long and assiduous study not only to draw them on paper, but also to model them both in gold and other metals and in marble." -Jacopo Strada to King Maximilian II, June 1559 A renowned antiquarian and artist, Jacopo Strada served as official antiquary to three emperors: Ferdinand I, Maximilian II and Rudolf II. He was an avid collector of antiquities, particularly of coins, and served as an agent for great collectors, most notably the German banker and arts patron Hans Jacob Fugger (1516-1557). In Titian's well-known portrait of Strada, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, the richly-dressed antiquarian is shown handling an ancient sculpture over a table on which lies another, fragmentary sculpture and a number of coins. Beginning around 1550, Strada began work on his monumental 36-volume manuscript catalogue of imperial medals and coins, commissioned by Hans Jacob Fugger (1516-1557), titled "Magnum ac Novum Opus continens descriptionem imaginum, numismatum omnium tam Orientalium quam Occidentalium. Bookplate of Patricia Milne-Henderson (1935-2019) to front paste-down. A good copy of the first edition, second issue, of this attractively illustrated work on numismatics. It features more than 450 woodcuts of coins and medals in clear impression, all with portraits of Roman emperors beautifully designed in white on a black background. Jacopo de Strada (1507-1588) was an Italian polymath and courtier. He started his career as a goldsmith in Mantua, becoming a renowned architect, artist, antiquarian collector, art dealer and advisor. He worked in the service of pope Paul III in Rome, and at the court of the Holy Roman Emperors Ferdinand I, Maximillian II and Rudolf II. At Augsburg, he entered the circle of the rich art patron Hans Jakob Fugger, to whom this work is dedicated. For Fugger, Strada also realised an impressive suite of 2,000 drawings in pen and ink of Greek and Roman coins. His position at the Emperors' court was high: there is a famous portrait of Strada by Titian (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna), in which he is depicted surrounded with coins and books, and another one by Tintoretto (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). 'Epitome thesauri antiquitatum' is a synthesis of Strada's life-long work on coins, and it "originated in his own collection of coins and medals. It was printed as part of a projected work which was to have been the culmination of his extensive research in European collections as well as his own. Strada particularly notes in his preface to this Epitome the assistance he received from Guillaume Du Choul and Jean Grolier, adding praise of Grolier's magnificent library" (Mortimer). Although, from the title, coins appear to be the main object of this work and Strada talks about the numerous examples he documented, this is not strictly a manual of numismatics. The author does not indicate the coins' currency value, nor their size or weight. Instead, this is an interesting compilation of brief biographies of rulers from Julius Cesar to Charles V Holy Roman Emperor, in which coins are used as the source for the images. Strada's interest in coins is iconographical, and he focuses on describing the portraits, their symbolism and historical significance. The fine woodcuts were realised by Bernard Salomon (15061561), a French painter and engraver specialised in illustrating emblem books. Interestingly, in addition to emperors, the countless coins depicted in this work also show portraits of wives and noblewomen, including Cleopatra VII. Strada was only interested in the genuine material relics of the past and his choice of images indicates his ambition to provide authentic sources: in the 'Epitome' empty circles occasionally appear in lieu of the coins of those rulers of whom he could not find a reliable numismatic image. Aspects discussed include his background, education and artistic training; his early activities in Germany; his trips to Lyon and Rome and the origins of his huge collection of visual documentation of Antiquity and of canonical modern works of art; and his appointment as architect and antiquary to Emperors Ferdinand I and Maximilian II. The second part discusses Strada's activities as architect and his share in projects of his imperial patrons in Vienna, the Munich Antiquarium, his own house and for private patrons. The third part discusses Strada's role in purveying antiques and works of art for his patrons, contents and function of his own collection or "Musaeum", and his ambition to set up as an international publisher. The conclusion first defines Strada's self-image as an antiquary; applying some of the terms of Everett Rogers' theory of the diffusion of innovations, it then demonstrates how, and to what extent, Strada's activities and the presence of his "Musaeum" in Vienna contributed to the acceptance of the ideas and the artistic idiom of the Italian High Renaissance to the north of the Alps.

Exceedingly rare work on mills and their mechanics. First and unique edition, published at the same time as a German edition (the German edition will be republished…in 1623), consisting of a dedication, a few explanatory pages but above all of 2 beautiful frontispieces and 100 etchings on double pages (fine issue of the engravings) depicting various types of mechanical systems intended to operate ornamental fountains or animal troughs, to grind grain or other products, to extract ore, to operate saws for cutting wood, to lift bales, to turn roasting ovens (pl. 49), to make paper (pl. 100), etc., all driven by men, beasts, water, wind or counterweight. The plates are engraved by Balthasar Schwan and Eberhard Kiefer after drawings by Jacopo Strada (Mantua 1507-1588 Prague), a pure Renaissance mind of many talents, since he excelled as a goldsmith, machine inventor, numismatist, linguist, art collector and dealer, but above all as a painter and architect in the service of three successive Habsburg emperors: Ferdinand I, Maximilian II and Rudolf II. Ottavio Strada (1550-1612) published the drawings of his uncle (see title) or grandfather (see dedication) almost 30 years after the latter's death, thus lagging behind recent innovations. He dedicated the first part to the Duke of Bavaria Frederick V, whose large coat of arms are printed halfway down the page, and the second to the governors of the United Provinces. The few explanatory pages are by Benjamin Bramer (1588-1652), a German architect and mathematician, who « espère de monster (Dieu aydant) en bref aussi apprès la publication de toutes les machines de nostre auteur, quelques aultres desseings de ma propre invention ». The beautiful titles by Matthias Merian show Archimedes, Vitruvius, Hermes and Diane as well as small scenes with windmills, watermills, rotation systems, etc. "First edition of Strada work on engineering designs, mills, pumps, and other machinery. Jacobus de Strada was a slightly older contemporary of Ramelli, whose own work on mechanical engineering was published in the year of Strada's death. It is clear that each man's work was independent; Beck suggests that Strada may have been aware of Ramelli's publication and decided against publishing his own designs in deference to the Italian. For whatever reason, publication was posthumous, edited by his grandson Octavius, and the 30-year delay resulted in Strada's designs losing their innovative edge. Nonetheless, the work shows Strada's close attention to detail and illustrates a wide range of machinery and engineering. One mill (plate 90) is described as best for producing ink black and is also ideal for such things as mustard, where the operator needs a certain distance from the burning dust (Cf. T. Beck, Beitraege zur Geschichte des Mashinenbaues, chapter 23.)" A superb copy very well preserved in its elegant blind-stamped contemporary binding.
