A faithful 1974 facsimile of the 1907 Little, Brown & Company first edition, this solid volume, unclipped and unmarked, is wrapped in a cream dust jacket featuring Beulah Strong's warm, American Realist color frontispiece: Aunt Jane in a slat-backed rocker with a scrap quilt on her lap, "reading" the patches with the inward gaze of a seer. Within, fourteen additional Strong images accompany the nine stories of this collection, which offer a plain-spoken but poignant defense of the dignity found in everyday domestic life, particularly in late 19th-century rural Western Kentucky. The first of these stories, "Sally Ann's Experience," was published to wide acclaim in an 1898 issue of Cosmopolitan, championed by none other than President Theodore Roosevelt, who called it "a tract in all families where the menfolk tend to selfish or thoughtless or overbearing disregard to the rights of their womenfolk.".

Owner name and date (Ceres Williamson, Sept. 1911), sunning on spine and pages are tanned with age but overall a good solid book and a delightful look back at the early days in American history.
