Her efforts taught her to understand firsthand the resilience of people living in insufferable conditions. In her inspiring memoir, Risking Life and Lens, Stummer recounts her experiences as a socially-concerned documentary photographer whose passion for her work overcame her fears.Stummer's images, from the mean streets of Manhattan and Newark, New Jersey, to the back woods of Maine and the mountains of Guatemala, expose the myths of poverty and serve as a metaphor for her challenges in her own life. The 159 photographs reproduced here recount Stummer's journey as an artist and her personal quest for truth.Risking Life and Lens shares Stummer's work and educational efforts and it provides valuable insights about race, class, and social justice-issues that continue to divide the country and the world. Her work has created change in both her own life and the lives of those who view it.

Erstausgabe Signiert
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Temple University Press, Philadelphia, PA. Part of the Visual Studies series, edited by Douglas Harper. First edition, first printing. Signed and warmly inscribed by Helen M. Stummer on the title page: To James/ Follow your heart - the/ passion is your gift/ for being here - / Helen. Signed by Helen M. Stummer at the artist's reception of her gallery show/exhibit "No Easy Walk: A Social Documentary 1977-2007" presented by the City of Plainfield, New Jersey's Cultural & Heritage Commission, running from May 11, 2007 to August 18, 2007 at the Anne Louise Davis Gallery, at the Plainfield, New Jersey Public Library; curated by Emmy Award winning journalist, John Bathke. Related ephemera includes a laid-in one page curatorial note on the exhibit by curator John Bathke, an artist's biography, an original black and white press photograph of a child looking out of his front door on to a vacant lot strewn with garbage and debris, surrounded by a chain-link fence with barbed wire, on Irvine Turner Boulevard, formerly Belmont Avenue, where the infamous 1967 Newark Rebellion took place, in Newark's Central Ward. Also included is a newspaper clipping announcing the Library of Congress' recent acquisition of 24 photographs by Helen M. Stummer, from her 25-year career documenting the effects of poverty. Sixteen of the works were photographed in Newark, while the remaining photographs were taken in Manhattan's East Village, in the 1980's. Additionally, three photo business cards, with contact info for the artist are included. All ephemera is housed in acid-free archival protection, leaving no traces of acidification to the monograph's pages. As for the book, hardcover editions are extremely, extremely rare, and were printed in a tiny print run, while the majority were published as softcover copies. And when the rare hardcover edition does surface, it is usually in poor, noncollectable condition, as they tend to come from institutional/library ownership. As for this copy, the book is near fine. Book is bright, tight and clean. Navy blue cloth stamped in gold on front panel and on backstrip. Pages and endpapers are bright and clean. Book's only flaw is a tiny shallow dent on front panel, barely. In truth, it would go unnoticed unless you felt for it. No dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with Helen Stummer's stunning photographs, alongside her poignant commentary. Stummer not only documents the effects of poverty here, she also documents the humanity of the people in the struggle, as they've welcomed her in as a friend, over a period of years, to document their lives. An incredible thirteen-years photo-documentary. Near fine; signed first printing, in hardcover, with related ephemera. Signed by Author(s).
