Paperback. Zustand: Good. Now in paperback--Donald Sturrock's Storyteller is "a major literary biography.packed with intimate details, sharply intelligent commentary, and surprising revelations" (The Washington Post) of one of the greatest writers in the twentieth century, whose work still delights millions around the world today. A single-minded adventurer and an eternal child who gave us the iconic Willy Wonka and Matilda Wormwood, Roald Dahl lived a life filled with incident, drama and adventure: from his harrowing experiences as an RAF fighter pilot and his work in British intelligence, to his many romances and turbulent marriage to the actress Patricia Neal, to the mental anguish caused by the death of his young daughter Olivia. In Storyteller, the first authorized biography of Dahl, Donald Sturrock--granted unprecedented access to the Dahl estate's archives--draws on personal correspondence, journals and interviews with family members and famous friends to deliver a masterful, witty and incisive look at one of the greatest authors and eccentric characters of the modern age, whose work still delights millions around the world today.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Enjoy learning a key technology. Undergraduates and beginning graduates in both first and second simulation courses have responded positively to the approach taken in this text, which illustrates simulation principles using the popular Simio product. This economy version substitutes grayscale interior graphics to keep costs low for students. Content: This textbook explains how to use simulation to make better business decisions in application domains from healthcare to mining, heavy manufacturing to supply chains, and everything in between. It is written to help both technical and non-technical users better understand the concepts and usefulness of simulation. It can be used in a classroom environment or in support of independent study. Modern software makes simulation more useful and accessible than ever and this book illustrates simulation concepts with Simio, a leader in simulation software. Author Statement: This book can serve as the primary text in first and second courses in simulation at both the undergraduate and beginning-graduate levels. It is written in an accessible tutorial-style writing approach centered on specific examples rather than general concepts, and covers a variety of applications including an international flavor. Our experience has shown that these characteristics make the text easier to read and absorb, as well as appealing to students from many different cultural and applications backgrounds. A first simulation course would probably cover Chapter 1 through 8 thoroughly, and likely Chapters 9 and 10, particularly for upper class or graduate level students. For a second simulation course, it might work to skip or quickly review Chapters 1-3 and 6, thoroughly cover all other chapters up to Chapter 10, and use Chapter 11 as reinforcing assignments. The text or components of it could also support a simulation module of a few weeks within a larger survey course in programs without a stand-alone simulation course (e.g., MBA). For a simulation module that's part of a larger survey course, we recommend concentrating on Chapters 1, 4, and 5, and then perhaps lightly touch on Chapters 7 and 8. The extensibility introduced in Chapter 11 could provide some interesting project work for a graduate student with some programming background, as it could be easily linked to other research topics. The all new Chapter 12 will support learning about Industry 4.0, digital twins, and how simulation and simulation-based scheduling can contribute to successful implementations. Supplemental course material is also available on-line. Fifth Edition Changes: The new fifth edition is written for Simio Version 10, the latest in simulation technology. We have incorporated many new features as well as reader suggestions. We have enhanced the Monte Carlo, input analysis, and output analysis content, and added new coverage of data-driven and data-generated modeling techniques. Finally, we added a new chapter named Simulation-based Scheduling in Industry 4.0 which illustrates how simulation is contributing to the creation and effective operation of digital twins and operational scheduling and control.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Mansfield Parkis Jane Austen's darkest, and most complex novel. In contrast to the confident and vivacious heroines of Emma andPride and Prejudice, its central character, Fanny Price, is a shy and vulnerable poor relation who finds the courage to stand up for her principles and desires. Fanny comes to live at Mansfield Park, the home of the wealthy Bertram family, and of Fanny's aunt, Lady Bertram. Though the family impresses upon Fanny her inferior status, she finds a friend in Edmund, the younger brother. Mansfield Parkexplores important issues such as slavery (the source of the Bertrams' wealth), the oppressive nature of idealized femininity, and women's education. This edition sheds light on these and other issues through its insightful introduction and wide-ranging appendices of contemporary documents.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. From the author of The BFG, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and many more beloved classics--a whimsical, witty, and revealing collection of the legendary children's author and writer Roald Dahl's letters written to his mother, from early childhood through Dahl's travels to Africa, his career in the Royal Air Force, his work in post-war Washington, D.C., and Hollywood, and the books that made him a literary star. Roald Dahl penned his first letter to his mother, Sofie Magdalene, when he was just nine years old. The origins of a brilliantly funny, subversive, creative mind were evident in boarding school, and as he entered adulthood, his penchant for storytelling emerged in his missives home from Africa, where he was stationed by Shell Oil, and then the desert camps of the Royal Air Force. His skills were sharpened after a plane crash in Egypt landed him in Washington, D.C., where his cheery letters home were cover for his work in the British Secret Service, along with gossipy updates on his spontaneous rise in Hollywood and his budding New York literary career. His mother was, in many ways, Dahl's first reader, and without her correspondence he might never have become a writer. Sofie Magdalene kept every letter her son wrote to her (sadly, her own side of the correspondence did not survive). It was she who encouraged him to tell stories and nourished his desire to fabricate, exaggerate, and entertain. In these letters, Dahl began practicing his craft, developing the dark sense of humor and fantastical imagination that would later produce his timeless tales. The author of James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and The BFG, Dahl is known by millions the world over today. But, writing candidly to the person who knew him best, Dahl was as singular a character as any he created on paper. Assembled by Dahl's authorized biographer Donald Sturrock, Love from Boy is a remarkable collection of never-before-published writing that spans four decades and chronicles the remarkable, unpredictable life of its author. While Dahl's books remain bestselling favorites for all ages, Love from Boy provides an unprecedented glimpse of the author through his own eyes--a life punctuated by tragedy, creative stagnation, unexpected fame, and fantastic adventure.…
