During the Depression, an ambitious lawyer finds himself torn between his high-powered… career, the demands of his difficult mother, and his life with his young wife and child. German-born photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt was one of the original staff photographers of "Life" magazine after it was purchased by "Time" founder Henry Luce in 1936. He published nearly 2500 photo stories for the magazine, with 90 of his images used for the magazine's covers, but is perhaps best remembered today for the iconic "V-J Day in Times Square" photograph. From the archive of the PIX Agency, an American photo house that acted as an intermediary between emigre photographers (as well as those still living in Europe) and the American magazine and newspaper market between 1935-1969. 10 x 8 inches, archivally mounted in a white mat measuring 17 x 14 inches. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. Based on the 1932 "Collier's" published short story "Jail Breaker" by W.R. Burnett. The meek Arthur Ferguson Jones is mistaken by the police for the evil bank robber killer Mannion, which Mannion decides to use in his favor. Starring Edward G. Robinson in dual roles in an early talkie by director John Ford. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus, with a tiny closed tear to the bottom margin. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. Based on the 1913 novel "The Peacock Feather" by Katharine Leslie Moore. A wrongly imprisoned singer promises a fellow inmate he will help the family of his victim when released. He subsequently delays his own dreams of being a gondolier in Venice in order to help the young girl and her grandfather. Nominated for an Academy Award. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus.
