Zustand: Fair. - 12mo, 5-3/4 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide. Softcover, bound in stitched pale yellow wrappers titled with a vignette illustration adorning the front cover and a full-page woodcut illustrating the "Death of Nelson" on the rear cover. The covers are darkened and stained and the corners worn. There is a tiny chip out from the front edge of the rear cover. The chipped and worn spine was roughly re-stitched at an earlier time. 64 pages, with pages 15 and 16 being a plate (Admiral Keppel) which is mis-bound in front of the first story. Illustrated with a title page vignette and 16 full-page plates illustrating the stories. The endpapers, printed on different stock, are darkened and stained. The page corners are creased and slightly worn. The binding is shaken and there is some foxing and staining throughout. Published in 1854 with a copyright date of 1853.Albert F. A graduate from Yale University, he served as pastor of the Framingham Congregational Church in Massachusetts and secretary of Boston's American College and Education Society while completeing his Doctor of Divinity degree at Yale. A conservative theologian, he delivered "An Address on the origin, progress & present condition of philosophy" at Hamilton College, explaining how cemeteries amplify the moral influence of Christianity. He delivered the address dedicating the Framingham Cemetery in 1848.RARE.

James and Edward were the sons of a Protestant missionary to Turkey. They returned to the U.S. for schooling. Both enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. James served as Chaplain with the 2nd U.S. Colored Troops (pp. 118-206); Edward served with Company K of the 57th Massachusetts Regiment (pp. 288-357). Neither brother survived the war.

Tarbox signed the free front endpaper Dec. 31, 1849 and details much of his personal and professional daily agendas throughout, during this ministry where he served at the Hollis Congregational Church, in Framingham MA. He alludes to public lectures attended during evenings; people met; personal income and expenses; and a propensity toward the important liberal causes and topics of the day. A small quantity of other, earlier manuscript materials written by him is accessioned at Yale University.
