In order to help celebrate the 200th anniversaries of both the nation and the City of San Francisco (which took place on June 29, 1776, when colonists from Spain established the Presidio of San Francisco at the Golden Gate and Miss…ion San Francisco de Asís a few miles away), the San Francisco Opera adapted Wallace Stegner's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, "The Angle of Repose" into an opera. Offered are two items from the World Premiere which took place in November of 1976: the program, which is signed by Stegner underneath his printed name on page [15], along with the opera company poster for the same. The program includes pieces by the composer, the librettist, the conductor, and Stegner, with the signature of Wallace Stegner (N.B., not recorded in Colberg). The poster has an illustration of "Fia" (1965) by Sam Tchakalian, San Francisco artist and teacher admired for his forceful abstract paintings. ___DESCRIPTION: Program: original rose wrappers printed in brown with title and the names of the performers, tan paper printed in brown ink, illustrated; octavo size (9" by 5.5"), unpaginated [24] pp., signed by Wallace Stegner on p. [15]. Poster: reproduction of the abstract painting "Fia", banners above and below with black lettering on white containing the details of the production; the poster measures 25" by 17.5", with the reproduction of the Tchakalian abstract being 15.5" by 17.25". ___CONDITION: Program: fine, like new. Working alongside David Park, Richard Diebenkorn, Hassel Smith, and others, Tchakalian developed one of the strongest and most enduring abstract paint…ing practices of anyone from his generation. He was born in Shanghai, China in 1929. He relocated in California in 1947 and he received his AA degree in 1950 from San Francisco City College. He continued his education at San Francisco City College in 1950, earning his BA in 1952 and his MFA in 1958. Tchakalian began his influential teaching career in 1961 when he joined the painting faculty of the Museum of Modern Art. Between 1962 and 1963, he was guest lecturer at the California College of Art and Crafts. In 1964 he became a painting instructor at the College of San Mateo until he joined the faculty of the San Francisco Art Institute (formerly the California School of Fine Arts) in 1966.His exhibitions during this time include the annual exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art between 1958 and 1965, Recent Developments in Bay Area Art (1964, San Francisco Museum of Art), Painters Behind Painters (California Palace of the Legion of Honor, 1967), The West Coast Now (Portland Art Museum, 1968), 40 Now California Painters (Tampa Bay Art Center, 1968), Contemporary American Painting (Whitney Museum of American Art, 1969), and Twentieth Century American Paintings (California Palace of the Legion of Honor, 1969).His solo shows include a twenty year retrospective at the Oakland Museum in 1978 as well as shows at the Portland Center for the Visual Arts, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Tchakalian's work is represented in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Oakland Museum and the Milwaukee Art Center.
