Permite, paralelamente, observar la evolución del sistema penitenciario franquista y cómo se fue forjando la conciencia o cultura carcelaria de las presas, que fueron capaces de construir, en circunstancias tan adversas, mecanismos de resistencia y solidaridad, así como las connotaciones específicas de la represión que el régimen franquista reservó a la mujer, castigada por su doble condición de roja y de mujer.

Siempre se las relegó, incluso por sus propios compañeros de viaje, a un lugar secundario. Su responsabilidad y su compromiso político eran, cuando no ignorad…os, al menos considerados como subsidiarios. No se tuvo en cuenta su militancia expresa, su lucha valiente y arriesgada en la retaguardia, imprescindible para sostener la más visible vanguardia masculina, y tampoco el alto precio que pagaron por ello. Este libro ofrece un balance de la geografía de la represión sufrida por el colectivo femenino durante la guerra y la inmediata posguerra hasta donde llega la investigación en este momento, se extiende hasta las postrimerías del franquismo, incidiendo en la doble moral del régimen en lo relativo a la prostitución y en un aspecto relativamente poco conocido y en el que aún queda mucho por explorar- como la depuración, subrayando la que afectó a dos sectores importantes: el de las docentes y el de las abogadas, y pretende saldar, de la mano de especialistas reconocidos, esa deuda que la sociedad y la historia tenía con ellas.
