First printing of these 5 papers accounting the observations of the comet. Bianchini and Maraldi discovered the comet in the morning sky on April 20, 1702. The comet was a short distance above the horizon and was said to resemble a "nebulous star".An independent discovery was made by Maria Margarethe Kirch (Berlin, Germany on April 21, 1702 and by Philippe de la Hire (Paris, France) on April 24. The last observation of the comet was made by Bianchini and Maraldi on May 5, 1702.…

Very good. Minor imperfections in the margins. Offsetting from opposite page. Size 8 x 9.5 Inches. Here is a c. 1840 German-language celestial chart displaying the course of the Comet of 1832 (Biela's Comet). The comet briefly caused a mass panic in October 1832, when it was incorrectly believed to be on a collision course with the Earth. A Closer Look The close approach of Biela's Comet to Earth's orbit in October 1832 caused a brief media sensation and mass hysteria, revealing the improved scientific knowledge of the times but also the limits of that knowledge, or at least its understanding among the public. Astronomers had sighted the comet in 1772 and 1805, leading to failed attempts to define its orbit, until a German-Austrian army officer named Wilhelm von Biela spotted the comet on its perihelion approach in 1826 and calculated its orbit. Thus, the appearance of the comet in 1832 was expected, but was misconstrued by some as an imminent threat to Earth, when in fact the Earth would not intersect the comet's orbit until a month after it had passed by (October 28 versus November 30, as indicated here). Not for the last time, leading astronomers of the day had to reassure the public that there was no immediate threat of a collision. In subsequent years, astronomers noticed that the comet had broken in two, and then into many pieces, resulting in an especially impressive meteor shower on November 27, 1872. This chart traces the course of the comet in the months and years prior to its close approach of Earth, and includes well-known constellations, Polaris (the North Star), cardinal directions, and other symbols to orient the viewer. Publication History and Census Though cataloged in the holdings of five institutions in North America and Europe, the publication information and provenance of this celestial map are unknown. It was likely published in the years immediately following the comet's sighting, and from the offsetting of ink from an opposite page looks to have been included in a bound work such as an atlas. Good. Some discolorations and margin soiling. Size 20.5 x 24 Inches. A striking 1743 Seutter illustration of the Comet of 1742, an exceptionally bright comet whose appearance inspired a wave of intellectual thought and scientific study. A Closer Look This exquisite engraving is composed of four distinct sections. The first features two decorative cartouches: one displaying the title along with details about the comet's appearance and trajectory relative to Earth's position, and the other offering commentary on the comet's apparent size and its movement through the constellations Draco, Cassiopeia, Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor. The third section presents a planar diagram of an armillary sphere centered on Earth, illustrating the comet's path. The fourth section showcases a celestial chart that maps the comet's full journey across the sky from March 13 to April 28, 1742. Comet of 1742 The Comet of 1742, today cataloged as C/1742C1, was a celestial event first observed in March 1742 in the constellation Draco. Its path was recorded by various astronomers, including Jacques Cassini, Leonhard Euler, and Thomas Wright, among many others. Described exceptionally bright, the comet was visible to the naked eye and attracted widespread attention across Europe - and, along with it, portents of impending doom. Its appearance coincided with a period of increasing scientific interest in astronomy, and its luminous passage contributed to ongoing discussions about the nature of comets, their orbits, and their potential impact on Earth. The Comet of 1742 added to the growing body of astronomical observations that would later influence studies of periodic comets, including the work of Edmond Halley. Publication History and Census This map was engraved and published by Mattha?us Seutter in Augsburg in 1743, one year after the year of the comet. Scarce to the market but well represented institutionally. References: OCLC 53179714, 556944420. Kanas, N, Star Maps: History, Artistry, and Cartography, (2nd Ed.), #6.3.4.5.…
