Soft cover. Good. Some verso wear. Size 8.5 x 8.5 Inches. An exceptional 1907 advertising chromolithograph advertising map and puzzle promoting the Pro-phy-lac-tic Tooth Brush. The image capitalizes on patriotism and national enthusiasm surrounding the 1907 launch of the Great White Fleet (an American International Naval Review - see below) to promote its signature product - a toothbrush - perhaps comparing the whiteness of the fleet with the bright white teeth of Pro-phy-lac-tic users. A Closer Look The image consists of a 54-piece chromolithograph puzzle. It features Uncle Sam with two Pro-phy-lac-tic Tooth Brushes in his breast pocket. In the background is the USS Connecticut (1906 - 1923), a newly made battleship and the flagship of the Great White Fleet. Surrounding the central graphic is a map of the Pacific, including East Asia, the western parts of North America, South America, Australia and New Zealand. It is accompanied by an advertising piece extolling the virtues of the Pro-phy-lac-tic Toothbrush. This was likely a pastedown in the interior of the original box - now unfortunately lost. The Pro-Phy-Lac-Tic Toothbrush Founded in 1866 in Florence, Massachusetts, by George A. Burr, S.L. Hinckley, D.G. Littlefield, I.S. Parsons, and George A. Scott, the Florence Manufacturing Company originally produced lockets, mirrors, and toilet brushes. By the late 1890s, their production range expanded to toothbrushes, aluminum goods, wooden toilet items, composition brushes, and mirrors. Their best seller was the well-promoted Pro-phy-lac-tic Toothbrush, which so dominated sales by 1924, the company was renamed Pro-Phy-Lac-Tic Brush Company. They were recognized by The Wall Street Journal as the leading toothbrush producer in the U.S. that same year. They also established a factory in Shanghai, China, during the early 20th century, which focused on brush bristle manufacturing. These bristles were then shipped to their Florence location for final toothbrush production. Pro-phy-lac-tic Brush Company and was acquired by the Lambert Pharmaceutical Co. in 1930. The Great White Fleet Inaugurated under President Theodore Roosevelt, the 'Great White Fleet' was an American naval review in the form of a world cruise lasting from December 16, 1907, to February 22, 1909. It consisted of 16 battleships divided into two squadrons, along with various escorts. The review was intended to demonstrate American naval power and deep-water naval capacity. It is considered a significant episode in the emergence of the United States as a world power. Roosevelt himself considered it one of his greatest accomplishments as president. The term 'White Fleet' refers to the stark white paint on the ship's hulls, leading to a particularly striking appearance. The fleet traveled from Hampton Roads, Virginia, around South America to San Francisco, the west across the pacific to New Zealand, Australia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, and India, before rounding the Horn of Africa and passing though the Red Sea, Suez Canal, and Mediterranean, stopping at Gibraltar, before returning across the Atlantic. Chromolithography Chromolithography, sometimes called oleography, is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Oftentimes, the process would start with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors were layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired product. Chromolithograph color could also be effectively blended for even more dramatic results. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it emerged as the dominant method of color printing. The vivid color chromolithography produced made it exceptionally effective for advertising and propaganda imagery. Soft cover. Good. Copperplate engraving with original hand color on laid paper, pasted down to wood and hand-cut to make a puzzle. Some narrow extremities of few pieces missing. Areas of scuffing and few spots. Size 19.25 x 26.25 Inches. This is Jean Janvier's 1760 rare, separately issued map of the western hemisphere, in its 1784 Paris edition. This map has, at an early date, been pasted down and hand-cut to form a simple jigsaw puzzle. Although the map does not name the new country, the colored national borders reflect the formation of the United States, which had been set according to the Treaty of Paris the year before this map was printed. The substance of the map is somewhat changed - dotted colonial borders have been burnished out and replaced with new ones, but the bulk of the engraving remains true to the 1760 edition. Sea of the West The map exhibits a boldly-rendered Sea of the West filling the American northern Pacific coast, dominating the largely unexplored Pacific Northwest. This massive and utterly fraudulent body of water generally referred to as the Sea of the West appears on many maps, overwhelmingly French, of the second part of the 18th century. The earliest was probably Jean-Baptiste Nolin's 1742 L'Amerique ou le Nouveau Continent . Nolin appears to have copied the relevant cartography from an unpublished manuscript globe by the great mapmaker, Guillaume De l'Isle (1675 - 1726). The notion did not truly take hold until its vigorous support, starting in 1752, in the maps of Philippe Buache (1700 - 1773) and Joseph Nicolas De l'Isle (1688 - 1768), who generally presented the monumental bay in conjunction with a viable Northwest Passage. Although De l'Isle and Buache were immediately accused of fraud with regard to this geographical feature, the Sea of the West appeared on many maps some editions even post-dating Cook. Janvier gives the Mer de l'Ouest its fullest expression, although he does not explicitly connect it to either the network of lakes and rivers extending westward from the Hudson Bay or to the similar network extending westward from Lake Superior. Discoveries of the Coureurs des Bois These river and lake networks were being actively explored throughout the early 18th century by a number of little-known but important French explorers. Most specifically, the explorations of the La Vérendrye brothers and other coureurs des bois , with regard to the discovery of the Lake of the Woods (L. Des Bois) and Lake Winnipeg (L. Ouinipigon), both of which appear on this map. Nonetheless, despite the activity of French explorers and fur traders, the entire continent northwards of the Mississippi River watershed and the St. Lawrence River is not territorially assigned. This little-explored region was then subject to questionable colonial jurisdiction. The French claimed all of modern-day Canada while at the same time this region was in its entirety part of the Hudson Bay Company's royal charter. Legally, this would become much clearer in the year after this map was first issued. In 1863, following the Seven Years War (1756 - 1763), France ceded nearly all of its North American territory to England. Nonetheless, this poorly policed and vast land remained hotly contested on the practical level as traders fur traders, backwoodsmen, and coureurs des bois flooded the wilderness in search of its most treasured commodity, beaver pelts. The Apocryphal Admiral de Fonte Further north we can find traces of Admiral de Fonte's apocryphal discovery of a passage from the Pacific (starting at the Archipel St. Lazare) eastward via a network of lakes and rivers to Baffin Bay. The De Fonte legend first appeared in a 1706 English publication entitled Memoirs of the Curious . This short-lived magazine published a previously unknown account by a supposed Spanish Admiral, Bartholomew de Fonte. De Fonte is said to have sailed up the Pacific coast of North America in 1640. On this voyage, he apparently discovered a series of gigantic lakes.…

Very good. All pieces in good condition. World map on verso. Size 21 x 15.5 Inches. This is a rare complete 1887 McLoughlin Brothers puzzle map of the United States. This map depicts the continental United States from California to the East Coast and from the Canadian border in the north to the southern border with Mexico. The map depicts forty-five states and one territory: at this point in American history the Dakotas had yet to be divided into North and South Dakota and the Indian Territory had not yet been admitted into the Union as the state of Oklahoma. The capital of every state is marked on the map along with numerous other cities. Countless rivers are included, such as the Missouri, Mississippi, Colorado, and Columbia. Outside the United States, Canada is labeled as a British possession (not as Canada) and the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick are labeled. South of the border, Mexico is labeled and the cities of Chihuahua and Guaymas are included. Lower California is depicted, along with Cuba and several other Caribbean islands. This puzzle was produced by McLoughlin Brothers Manufacturing of New York. We dated this puzzle at 1887 because it does not depict separate North and South Dakotas.
