In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Book Club Edition. A striking postwar psychological Southern noir from Theodore Strauss, whose novel follows Danny, a young man haunted by both inherited stigma and an accidental killing in a small Southern town. Originally serialized in Cosmopolitan Magazine befo…re its October 1946 publication, Moonrise combines crime fiction with an unusually introspective examination of guilt, identity, and redemption. The novel later served as the basis for the acclaimed 1948 Republic Pictures film directed by Frank Borzage. Particularly noteworthy is the dramatic monochrome pictorial endpaper artwork depicting an armed man fleeing through a swamp while pursued by searchers. The illustration is signed 'Tesar' and serves as one of the book's most visually memorable production features. The dust jacket, designed by H. Lawrence Hoffman, is equally evocative, employing bold color and atmospheric landscape imagery that perfectly complements the novel's mood. The striking original dust jacket was designed by noted commercial illustrator H. Lawrence Hoffman (1911-1977), one of the foremost American book-jacket artists of the mid-twentieth century. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Hoffman created more than 600 covers for major publishers including Viking Press, Random House, Alfred A. Knopf, and Simon & Schuster. His atmospheric, painterly designs have become increasingly appreciated by collectors of vintage American books and graphic design. This copy remains a handsome example. The dark green publisher's cloth is clean and attractive with bright gilt spine lettering and only light rubbing at the extremities. The binding is square and sound, and the interior is remarkably clean with bright pages free of writing or ownership markings observed. The illustrated endpapers remain especially crisp and visually impressive. The original Book Club Edition dust jacket is present and retains strong color despite moderate wear, including several chips at the spine ends and corners, short closed tears, and edge wear. The jacket remains highly displayable and, together with the vivid endpaper artwork, gives this copy exceptional shelf appeal for collectors of mid-century American fiction. Edition Note: This is a 1946 Book Club Edition, identifiable by the 'Book Club Edition' statement on the front dust-jacket flap while retaining the original 1946 publication date on the title and copyright pages. Although not a first printing, it was produced contemporaneously with the novel's initial publication and remains an attractive early edition. Theodore Strauss (1912-1984) was an American novelist, journalist, screenwriter, and documentary filmmaker. Before establishing himself as a novelist, he worked a remarkable variety of jobs - including berry picker, road-gang laborer, office clerk, and printer's apprentice - experiences that informed the authentic working-class characters found throughout his fiction. During World War II, Strauss served as a correspondent for The New York Times in Canada, Alaska, and the Aleutian Islands and also directed camera crews for the National Film Board of Canada. His novels are noted for their psychological depth and realistic portrayals of ordinary people confronting moral dilemmas. Illustrated endpapers signed 'Tesar'; jacket design credited to H. Lawrence Hoffman (illustrator).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Very Good dj. First Edition. [green cloth (see note), light wear at spine ends, otherwise a solid clean book; jacket slightly edgeworn, very shallow paper loss at spine ends, small triangular surface-scrape at upper right corner of front panel, light soiling to rear panel, about a one-inch split at… bottom front hinge]. Dark and brooding novel of loneliness, romance and murder in a small Southern town; basis for the dark and brooding, and very romantic, Frank Borzage film (1948) of the same title. [NOTE: This novel was issued in both a red and green cloth binding, with the green being slightly thicker than the red (at least in examples I've seen). There are also two variant dust jackets: this one, designated "Variant B" (in Johnson, "The Dark Page"), features a man's head poking out of a cloudbank and partially blocking the moon, and is (again in my experience) less common than the "no-face" version.] NOISBN. Illustrated by (dj design) H. Lawrence Hoffman (illustrator).
