Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Thomas N. Bethell (Author photograph) (illustrator). Second Printing [stated]. xi [1], 372 pages. Illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Index. The dust jacket has wear, soiling, chips and tears. A history of the Boston Massacre, a prelude to the Revolutionary War that occurred on March 5, 1770 when British troops, stationed in the colony to discourage dissent, fired into a crowd of demonstrators, killing five colonists and resulting in the murder trials of several soldiers. The British soldiers were found guilty of manslaughter and had their thumbs branded with an 'M' for murder as punishment. Hiller B. Zobel is a retired Associate Justice of the Superior Court of Massachusetts and author or coauthor of several books on various legal topics, including the Boston Massacre and John Adams. He graduated from Harvard College in 1953 and received his law degree in 1959 from Harvard. He was recalled from retirement in 2006 to serve on the Middlesex Superior Court. Some of the legal tasks in which he played a significant role include: -Judge at the murder trial of Louise Woodward, British au pair in 1997; -Libel counsel for WCVB-TV; and Professor at Boston College Law School. "Here is the story of one of America's great historical encounters from its earliest beginnings through the King Street incident on March 5, 1770, and the trials of the British soldiers and John Adams's role in their defense. Starting in 1760, with the arrival of the hapless new governor Francis Bernard, this account traces two contrapunctal themes: mercantilist Britain's doomed effort to extract needed revenue from her colonies, and the rise in Boston of the subversive revolutionary organizations, relentlessly perfected by Samuel Adams. From a wealth of printed and documentary sources, including hitherto-ignored records, this book describes the mounting violence in Boston: the Stamp Act riots of 1765 and the Liberty riot of 1768.a string of clashes during 1769 almost produced serious bloodshed. The next February, a suspected customs informer fired into a crowd of boys besieging his home, killing one. The massive funeral inflamed Boston even more. Within a week the final confrontation took place on King Street." (from front flap) An acclaimed, very comprehensive history of the "Boston Massacre," the events leading up to it & its aftermath- a key & dramatic period in colonial pre-revolutionary American history. With two sections of captioned historical images, extensive footnotes. A definitive history of this most-important series of events leading to the American Revolution against Britain, in its rarest contemporary form, with distinguished provenance & related ephemera.
